Bike leaking oil where the speedometer cable enters housing, dealer installed new o-ring and was leaking again before making it home.( 20 miles) Never saw anyone else mention this, is it common and something you have to live with?( or trade away)

Every other time I've heard this mentioned, and it has been a few times, it was the gasket/seal/washer/o-ring missing where the cable seats to the engine. If it's the same one you say was just replaced, I'd wonder if it's done correctly.

Im having the same problem. After i remove it and reinstalled it, it still wants to leak. The microfish doesnt even show the o ring. Its frustrating cause i tried different tightness and still leaks.

I've got the RH side cover off my engine so I will look at how is is retained/sealed tell all'u'all later.

It's not listed separately because they only sell it as part of the speedo cable.

searched the site found this thread but no answer to the problem....
parts counter @ the dealer couldnt find on his computer just shows the whole cable.. went in the back shop and talked to one of the mechs he had a box of assorted o rings but the one we decidied on was the wrong one it seals at the bottom of the knurrled nut not up inside ...will try the dealer again tommorow
any thumper head got the answer??? ill buy the beer!! ;D

Wish someone with a new bike can make a description and/or picture of the RING.

It has to seal of the rotating inner cable and the curled nut.

Maybe it can be made outof 1/8 thick rubber sheet and 2 hollow punches of the correct diameter.

I use an "O" ring that fits the inside of the nut and have NO leaks.

Just off the top of my head I seem to remember there is an up/down orientation to the seal. It has a channel in one side that goes down I think, but I need to confirm next time I pull the cable (to pull the tank to get to all that other stuff....)

Insert an "O" ring inside the coupling housing screw. Once you insert the speedo cable into the housing properly spread some silcon around the speedo cable were it inserts into the male threated couping inside the cheap housing screw cap which will also hold the "O" ring in place. Threat it down, be careful when using channel locks when tighten threated housing cap. The "O" ring which you can purchase at any hardware store along with the silicon will stop the leak. 8) Just wanted to say howdy to every one. New to site and enjoying it. I own a 2000 doing a complete overhaul and customizing.

FYI, The pillow seat for those looking for an inexpensive way to make the seat more comfortable and sit a little lower use memory foam. An electic turkey knife is the easiest way to form the foam. My butt conforms directly to the seat and once I step off the bike the seat springs right back to its original size and look. I have about 2" all the way around but plan on taking it down to 1/2" thick, buying some leather material to shape the seat. I plan on throwing the cheap plastic seat frame away and replacing it with a piece of 1/16" tin plate. You can shape the tin plate any way you want.

My first contribution to the site. Hope it spurs you on to thinking up even better less inexpensive (not cheap) solutions. Later 8)

Ok out comes the bat camera ...

this is an old seal that leaked pretty bad and was having some issues with the cable itself so ordered in a new speedo cable - it start to leak as well! - I've read of people using orings with good luck - the oring I tried melted - what fixed mine was a new seal that leaked a little and yellow teflon tape around the threads - not the white stuff - the yellow tape is thicker and rated for fuel and oil contact.

Does anyone know which way the channel goes for sure. I've pulled my tank so many times, I lost track on this thing when it fell out one time while pulling the tank.

Down so far as I can tell - i'm like you on the'95 I've had it apart countless times - '02 not much and it is down on it - makes sense otherwise it would fill up like a cup

FWIW, I'd never bother with the stock oil seal again. I finally went to a proper sized o-ring.

End of problem.

I was rare (unlike others on this site) in that I never lost my seal/O-ring first time I took the tank off - it stayed with the cable.

Next time I took the tank off, mindful of what happened to others after reading this site, including finding out the seal only came as part of the cable, I took the seal to the local hardware store & got a matching plain O-ring. Used that rather than the original which I put away for safe keeping & CAREFULLY tightened the nurled part of speedo cable with pliers. did not use silicon.

no leak before or since. maybe I'm lucky for once.
