Title: Pick up the new 2006 S40 Tomorrow
Post by Taz on 03/10/06 at 15:35:59

Had the call waiting for me on the ans. machine today: "your new 2006 S40 Savage is ready for pick-up."

First thing tomorrow! It'll be about a 40 mile ride home from the dealer.

I'm thinking of giving her and oil and filter change once home. Why? Well I have the new magnetic drain plug that I just feel will be beneficial especially during the break-in miles. Have filters and oil too. I had a few weeks to prepare for tomorrow.

Yes I'm pumped...  ;D 8) ;D Plus it's going to be in the 80's all weekend.

Frequent oil changes during break-in is a good thing  :) Drive it easy for a few hundred miles. That shouldn't take long. Enjoy your new bike.

I think the magnetic drain plug during breakin is a great idea. Don't burn yourself after the 40 mile ride. Remember not to hold the engine at steady speed, for any length of time during the breakin miles. You could take pictures while the engine is cooling down before you change the oil.

while the oil is draining, move around the machine and check fastener tightness, remember it was assembled by a min wage stoner dude at the dealership  :o

89 smiles/miles to get her home; kinda took the long way. I've heard this phenomenon discussed before about the Savage Beast.

Anyway I changed the oil and put in the magnetic drain plug. Didn't change the filter though. At the magic 600 mile mark I'll change the oil and filter and gaskets.

Much better than I thought. Less vibration than expected and no backfiring when I let off the gas.
I repeatedly took her up to 60mph and back down to 45 for most of the distance. I tried to take her down lower a few times like 30-35 before going back up to 60, but the bike liked the 40-45 mark better. 45-55 appeared to be the sweet spot for this initial ride.

Conclusion: for real world driving this bike is going to be just fine.

The wife who drives a 750 Vulcan said the little Savage was much easier to flick around the curves. I think this bike is maybe 100 lbs lighter than her Vulcan.

Taz, I'd be interested in what brand, model of drivers backrest you got for the S40. And where. Thanks.

Very nice (tall, plain, no buttons) backrest for only $129 delivered. Took about 2 1/2 weeks.
1 Bolt each side to install. They shipped longer bolts to replace the original. You can get a short one, and you can get either one with buttons.

Great looking bike, Taz! Looks sharp. And really comfortable with that  backrest. And plenty of cargo carriers. Good work.

I pick up my new S40 on Tuesday. This is my very first bike and I wanted a bike to ride along side my husband. I got tired of looking over the shoulder. I'm a little nervous and take the MSF course at the end of May. It is a beautiful bike and who would have ever thought that this former Junior Miss would be riding a bike. Sweet! 8)

Great looking bike, Taz.

Try making the pictures more up-close so we can see the way the drivers backrest is fitted..
