Title: gas tank graphix
Post by Jim_R on 03/09/06 at 06:38:22

What do you guys think about me buying this for my tank?

im not sure.  I would love some flame decal but I cant find any that look decent.  I was going to get it airbrushed but me and Torque found out the hard way my airbrush artist friend is terrible.

certainly different strokes for different folks - but I like the understated gold suzuki sticker from the '95 and older model best I think

One of the better Suzuki graphics.  However, I think the Savage looks much better without any company specific graphics anywhere.

I'm having the same delema.. painted savage and nothing on  it.. i can't decide if i want to do something custom, buy vynl graphics or put the stock ones on.. or possibly the stock ones that you are looking at as well.

I think the tank looks fine the way it is but you could always try something from these guys: http://www.westonsigns.com/.

When I painted my bike, I decided to leave off the graphics. (I couldn't afford them). I found some "Savage" graphics on e-bay for less than ten bucks. I put those on my side covers. I see those on e-bay all the time. You get two "SUZUKI" stickers and two "SAVAGE" stickers. I gave the "SUZUKI" stickers to my son.

Those older Savage tank decals are cool ... way better than the ones used from 2000 to 2004! Love the "Big Single"!

There's a company out there (the name of which escapes me ...) that produces tanks decals in the form of replica "Nose-Art" from WW2 aircraft; the kind with 1940's pin-ups ... these look super unique ... but are probably better suited to Bikes with a flat-black or olive-drab paint job ...

i was thinking about getting that image
<<--------------- the pin-up on my tank.
but my bike is orange so i doubt it would work.. maybe if i had all the red in that picture changed to black it might work out.. the site vroom put up looks like the place i would need to go to have that made into a decal.

Those are reusable vinyl graphics that work pretty well as long as the tank is smooth and clean.

When I first got my Savage, I put some removable flames from CycleGraphics on the tank sides to cover the Suzuki emblems before I actually removed them.  Here's an old image:

I had previously removed the S40 and Suzuki stickers and badges from my bike and just this past weekend removed the Boulevard badges from the tank.  I really like the de-badged look.  If I put anything on the tank it will be something that says something about me...something custom, not something I could see on someone elses bike.  But for now I'm staying smooth clean and clear....

its a really hard decision.  I think it looks kinda plain without anything so I will have to do something.  I have looked at http://www.westonsigns.com/ before and I was not too impressed.  There are some decent designs but some look very cheesy.  I kinda wanted flames at 1st but they are so oveplayed.

Wow such a large response too.  I even though about making my own decal because Im a pro at photoshop, but I heard even with clear coat they fade in the sun.  I dont want that at all.  Decisions decisions decisions!
Thanks for all your responses :)

I'm probably gonna go with the flat black look for a while (when I get to doing it at all) either with the suggested truck bed liner or powdercoat.  Until then, I am using decals (below) from WestonSigns.com.

Thumper (http://www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/archives/000776.html) has been on Thumper for 10 months with no fading, although I am garaged out of the sun both at home and at work.

With you own custom decal you (1) have something unique to you and (2) no big deal to replace every year or so.

you may even want to check out uh, poster pop.  they are just stickers, but high quality.  The stickers are on a clear background, not white...

http://www.posterpop.com/

I've got one of Coop's stickers on my V*. looks good, i think.  I had to get it off of ebay as those are discontinued...

yeah, this one:

I want to get this one for my speed eventually, but with a yamaha tuning fork instead of the stp logo:

My bike is black, and if I customize her, I think I'll go with 'ghost flames' that I'll design and paint myself. A nice ghostly grey/silver on black is sweet. I saw that look on Overhaulin' one day and it just screamed classic.

to all the photoshop genius'
I have the program but my knowledge is limited.

The pin-up i have as my icon
<----
is there an easy way to turn all the red, into black?
maybe if i could turn it black and white and avoid doing that to the girl herself?.. im just thinking if i make that into a tank decal it will look terrible with red on orange(my current color)

Jim,
I agree with you on the bike looking to plain.. doesn't look bad but needs something..   Mine looks great orange, Black and chrome, but the tank and small side panels look to plain..

I have the cyclegraphics Texas flag on my tank and my hubby put a fancy Texas flag/longhorn emblem on the back of my sissy bar where the small suzuki emblem was. I get all kinds of compliments on my bike, Harley riders can't stay away from it and won't believe it's a removable thing. I got my courage to put them on from you guys on this site. If I was smart enough to figure out how, I'd post a pictue but right I don't think I can.

Decals:
Are they durable? Do you clearcoat over them?

Title: Re: gas tank graphix
Post by Paladin on 03/09/06 at 18:30:07

Decal durability would depend upon the ink.  A laserjet with the fused on powder would probably be better than an inkjet.  Exposure to sunlight would be a factor.  Clearcoating is part of the instructions for the injet decal.

I have PaintshopPro, but we should have the same tools.

Easiest:  You ask your 13-y-o daughter "how do I ... " and she starts to explain, realizes you are hopeless, shoves you aside and does it in a few seconds.

Else, use the tool to select an area you wish to alter, then adujst the hue of that area.

Else, use the tool to select the area of the girl, copy her, greyscale the picture, go back to lotsa color, paste the girl back in.

You want to use the highest resolution you can so you can print at 300 dpi.  (A 5" high graphic would be 1500 pixels.)

My tank is going to be the metallic coppery orange from Duplicolor (since I WAS the first here to use that particular color). With shredded Confederate battle flag side graphics. Not sure what to do with the seam if I run the English tank I scored today...

Thanks Paladin,  that explains enough for me to figure it out.

Now i can't decide if i want that on the sides of the tank or just a single large on on the top..

any ideas?

I'd always opt for the sides to allow for a tank bib or tank bag, etc.

Hey Kropatchek,

Do you know what the symbols mean on the yellow bikes graphics?
Either way you gave me an idea. The symbol farthest to the right looks like a smiley face, and well, I just painted my bike yelow!
