Hello new here :)

Curious if there is a fatter tire size that can be used on the back without any mods? Don't want much more just a little and I don't want to put one on and find it rubs everywhere. I pick up the bike Thurs. and haven't measured the clearance.

I didn't see anything on the topic when I ran a search. I'm not sure if this is a dumb question because I've always ridden dirt and this Savage is a project bike. I will post pictures. It's cool my (this bike) is in pretty tough cosmetic shape, i like it!!

190/40 is as big as it goes. the machine comes with a 180 but 190 is a common replacement. depending on shock settings, it may rub on the inside side rail bolts.

mines a bobber so it clears just fine.

You can run a 150/80/15 IF you buy a premium brand tire, with a true round profile. A Kenda, Cheng Shin/Maxxis, Sakura, etc, won't cut it. Metzeler, Dunlop, Avon, Continental or similar, ONLY! No Bridgestones, they are junk.

Seattle huh? I'm at the bike breakers you see on TV all the time, at the Auburn store. Drop by and I'll try to get you hooked up properly.

Oh, if you are used to dirt bikes, you'll hate the ride/handling of the stock rear tire. A 130/80 or 130/90 might be a better choice, they'll turn more readily.

I just searched on larger tire... but I did tell it to go back a max of 800 days.

First mods will be the 883 exhaust, the carb tuning, (the plug is still in), and omg the paint (the paint someone put on is hilarious, it's the old metallic blue like you would put on a muscle car, but I think it was done with cans, has dust and pieces of stuff stuck in it)

Hi Kevin, there are 2 more in Moses lake with a 3rd due down from Juneau, AK end of the month. I've got mine set up as a bagger, B-i-L has my old windshield and soft bags on his 87. We did the HD XL muffler bit with the adapter pipe and built a package rack from one that came with it and some old brackets I had and the bottom 1/2 of the sissy bar. Backrest came from the upper 1/2 of my old sissy bar. One from Juneau is a 99 that belongs to my S-i-L there that she doesn't ride since she got a HD with sidecar so she can take her grandaughter with her. Hope to see you when we figure out a ride this summer. Also check into a club called FSSNOC (fssnoc.org) and them Max #3408 sent you. Happy riding.

Is there anyone who have some pics of the original tire and the 150/80/15, maby side by side ? Could be cool to see the difference before spending ye hard erned money 8) when they are mounted off course !

The rim size is optimum for a 130/90/15 so anything bigger including the std. 140 is actually an over size.

Ah, but which 150/80-15? A few manufactures have charts of mounted tire sizes, and they can vary by quite a bit between tires of the same nominal size. The Dunlop D404 is one of the smaller 150/80's (which I did not know when I got mine, and I can't fine the list I compiled, assuming I even posted it. Memory is the second thing to go.)

When I bought mine back in Feb 98 it had a 130/80/15 on it. Which isn't made anymore. Yes it was an IRC.

When I had the tire replaced in 2000, the only 15 incher in stock was the 140/90 ChengShin. It's still on there, a bit crunchy now, but still ridable. Better tire (for less money) than any of the IRCs. Still mad at the Memphis dealership for putting on a 140 though.

When I get ready to swap out the tires, I'm going with a 130/90/15. Probably run a Kenda Kruze. Good tire for a rather small price. Until I get the new front end built, I'll likely run a vintage styled Carlisle (oops, they are vintage) 3.25/3.50-19 or ChengShin. $20 each at work.

Hopefully when I go to get one I'll be able to see them side by side in the store, I think that will be enough to judge whether it's worth upsizing or not.
So far I am really liking the Metzeler as a replacement. Good looking tire. spendy, but if it keeps the bike on the road!

My best sucess so far with rear tires has been the Dunlop K555 140/80 meant to be used on the Honda PC800. It has the next higher load range capacity I believe and is made for sports touring. It seems slightly larger in width and OD than stock but does not rub like the 90 series or the 150 does. Not cheap but a good tire and remember the contact patch and tire quality is critical to keeping the shiny side up and the rubber side down. Max

Hey, we're Portlanders ourselves... nice to know I have company. Cheng Shin... I used to wonder how a tire could be so slippery AND wear out so fast! This is my wife's bike (she thinks ;)) and has 17 miles on it. I imagine I will be looking for a new rear tire by summer's end.
I ride a dual-sported XR650R usually. This morning I got pulled over in Beaverton for being on a motorcycle - seriously. My taillight had burned out, but that's legal in the daytime. It was, essentially, a license/registration/insurance fishing trip, but that's Beaverton... a city of 50,000 with more red-light and photo-radar cameras per capita than anywhere in the nation, I'm sure...
