Title: New to the group
Post by Brewbrother on 03/03/06 at 17:13:09

Today I purchased a 2001 Savage. I looked at quite a few bikes that were new before purchasing this model. It will be only the 4th bike I have owned in 30 years of riding. My last bike was a beloved Honda CB 550 but Hurricane Ivan destroyed her and now I am a thumper rider. Before that bike was a 1969 sportster which was a vibrating, rumbling kidney shaker that only lasted 2 years as I started losing sensation in my fingers due to the constant shaking. My learner bike was a 1956 JAWA 250 which was a great bike to learn on and actually appericiated in value. Other than adding some saddle bags, the only change will be the removing the  asctetically unpleasing tank decal. That was my first use of a very nice and easy to navigate tech fourm. Its very similar to the SOHC fourm that I used to enjoy.
My reasons for purchasing the savage was simplicity of design, easy to maintain and a thrill to ride with a great sound. This model like all others it seems has a plug seal leak and I suppose I will enjoy learning how to repair it. I called the local Suzuki shop and they said they would do it for $175 and that it might last 10000 mile before it needed replacement. I mentioned that If its a constant problem why didn't suzuki change the design and stop the problem. His response was WHY?? I suppose he makes a nice profit at $175 a pop.

Welcome Brewbrother :) You are right on the money. Easy to wrench and fun to ride. They're great bikes and I'm sure you'll enjoy yours.

This is a great forum. You'll find lots of friendly helpful people here.

There is also the strong pull at low RPMs, narrow profile, light weight.  But I have to ask, whatcha Brew, brother?

TY the only thing missing  from this forum is the ability to add or subtract karma. I'm sure I will get over it.

The brew part is a nick my mom gave me. It seems that when I was five or six beers disappeared from the fridge and my dad noticed. My mother started to stake out the fridge and soon discivered that I was the culprite. Seems I was chugging cans in an effort to emmulate dad. the brother tag is just my attempt to relate to fellow riders in a proactive way.

If the Savage performs and runs as well as the CB then I'll be here for quite awhile.

My previous street bike was a GS450E.  I've not riden a 550/4, but looked it up.  The multi-cylinder produces more high end horsepower, due to it's ability to spin faster.  The single produces more low end torque, due to the dinner-plate sized piston.  (well, maybe not quite that large.)

The difference is noticible in a pass situation where you are doing 45-50 mph in top gear and come upon a slow moving semi.  The multi requires you to rachet down a few gears to get acceleration.  The Thumper will motivate with just a twist of the throttle.  The Savage is about 70 pounds lighter than your old CB, has the laid back cruiser riding position, but is otherwise quite similar (two wheels, motor, wind in the face.)

As I have ridden both bikes I can  attest that the LS is a better performing bike than my CB for the following reasons. First it has a much better shifting transmission. The CB's are famous for their clunking trannys and sometimes not shifting properly. Second the belt drive is a better delivery for power. Don't get me wrong my CB was an exceptional machine that served me well and only failed due to my error or hurricanes. The LS would beat it in a quarter drag in a stock race IMHO. I am unaware of the top speed for the LS but I never got my CB over 95mph. EVER. Not even with a tail wind. It would cruise effortlessly at 70 mph and I have not ridden the LS enough to know its prefered cruise speed. Needless to say I will be finding out quite a bit more over the next few weeks. Living in the sub tropics makes riding year round an easy option and as long as its not raining or there is a hurricane.
