Title: Went and looked at a used Savage today
Post by tjhart on 02/24/06 at 19:12:27

The MSF BRC is a week away. The last thing I want is to leave the class and not have my own machine to practice on...  ;D

So I looked at this Savage for sale not too far away. It's a 2002 with just under 3,000 miles. It's never been dropped. No signs of any oil leaks on the engine. There isn't even any blue OR gold on the exhaust. A windshield and saddlebags come with it.

It wouldn't start, though. The owner had it on a trickle charger, and offered for me to return next week when the battery is charged.

I forgot to take a look at the oil. Not sure if I could tell much, other than to be wary if there wasn't any - or if it was as thick as tar...

The kicker is that he wants $3,000 for it. I didn't make an offer, since I'm going back when he gets it running.

So if I can talk him down on price next week, I may have a bike ready to ride when I get back from MSF.  ;)

3K miles on an '02 -- that's less than 100 miles a month.  Poor baby has spent most of it's life neglected in a garage -- probably without stablizer in the gas.  Just needs a little cleaning and/or a good long run.  Even at $3K it is not a bad deal.

I think they had fixed the plug problem in the 2002's... and I don't think you usually see the plug leak until somewhere between 4k and 7k miles anyway.

The plugleak was'tn fixed. The partnumber changed and the plug was improved.
If the Suzuki factory mechanics installed the plug as per manual it still isn't sealed and will leak some time in the future.

Chances are it is the original battery, had to replace the one on my '02 six months ago. The bike should have the new style plug in it, '02 was the first year it was advailable. What color is it, black or silver were the only two colors offered (I think). $3,000 with bags and a windshield isn't a bad price if the bike is in real good condition. Good luck on it and on the MSF

In my opinion - WAY HIGH PRICE. $2200-2500  is what You should pay. The bike in mint condition is worthed up to $2700. Even if it is 2002 or 2003- so what. It is still a Savage -  exactly the  same like 1996. New battery and a carb. clean and the bike will be Yours to ride and to start putting money into it. I personaly preffer  to buy  '96 or '98 cheap , put $150-200 into it and have excellent runningg bike for $1100-1300. If I want it looking great, I'd polish all the Al. parts in one afternoon and I can pay a professional to paint it custom up to $ 2-300. I'd reupholster the seat and I'll have not only a looker, but also a runner.

I bought my 2001 with 1800 miles for $2000.00. It came with windshield, saddlebags, highway bar, gel grips, and every chrome piece you can buy for a Savage. I have spent about $800.00 now on mods. I would not take $3000.00 for mine. If the bike runs good and you can deal with the seller a little, buy it!

custom paint for $300! sign me up! it cost me $300 to do it my self, and that was a solid color! my friend who is a custom car painter said he'd do it for $650 and would add flake for free.

I took off the 5 painted pieces and carried them to the paint shop. I got Viper red with clear coat for $180.00 cash.

If there is somebody in Az Who wants paint- I have 2 guys who will do it. If anybody is interested- I'll pass the info/ I don't play middle man/. So far I don't pay anything, but they owe me a lot of favors. Anyway- depending on the paint , it shouldn't go over $300 /unless some exeptional paint/. The trick is, they have a lot of paints- leftovers from previos jobs.
So I am not feeding You some BS.

Oh I'll definitely deal with him. He has every right to ask as much as he wants for his bike. I take no offense.

By the same token, I have every right to offer whatever I'm willing to pay.

Based on Kelly Blue Book (which dictates how much it can be insured for),  and recent e-bay sales for bikes in the same condition, I think $2200 - $2500 is the range I'd be willing to pay.

While paying for an older one and fixing it up sounds nice to my pocket book, I really do suck when it comes to turning a wrench. Every project I've ever started that requires tools has gone sour, and cost me lots of money and aggravation. I do best with 2 tools:The yellowpages and my checkbook. At least I know my limits.  ;)

That's what I'm talking about. Get it for $2200-2500 and be happy ! If the guy doesn't want, let him wait till april or may, let him put am add- $ 50 let him deal with 5-10 tire-kickers and let him get $200 more.

o ok when u said custom paint i thought u meant multi colors, with an airbrushed skull or two, yeah u can get a solid color for 400 easily.

Title: Re: Went and looked at a used Savage today
Post by slavy on 02/25/06 at 21:51:55

I mean couple of colors. I personaly prefer marbleized deep purple. This is what i got on a different bike that is for sale. It doesn't make much sense to me to put too much effords in the paint if I am riding my bike every day and beat the livigh hell out of it. On top of this I use mine like a loaner bike sometimes.

Let the negotiations begin...  ;D

When I called the owner today, he said the motorcycle still wouldn't start. It spent all weekend on a trickle charger. He wasn't sure if it was the battery. He suggested that he might have had the trickle charger hooked up 'wrong'.

I can just see my offer price dropping by the day.

"Well, sir, it is in great shape cosmetically, but it won't run. I may have to buy a battery($40). You admit that it wasn't winterized, so we're looking at a carb cleaning by a certified mechanic ($100). You also mentioned that it hasn't been serviced in a while. It's going to need an oil & filter change ($20)."

"Since it isn't running, I'll need to rent a truck/trailer in order to haul it to my place. ($80)"

"I'm kind of disappointed. With an advertised price of $3k, I was hoping for something that I could drive off your property. All this extra work is a bit aggravating($200). Besides, Kelly Blue Book has this thing valued at only $2700 if mint from a dealer. Of course that would be running condition. Trade-in value is $1800"

Unless he finds another buyer, or feels he can get it running on his own, I figure I've got a much better chance to get this bike for something closer to $2k or under than $3k.

Now I may or may not have the mechanic do all the work. Frankly, since I'll just be coming from MSF, and since I haven't done ANY wrenching or diagnostic work on a bike, I'm sorely tempted to let a mechanic get it running this time. I'll ride it and get the permanent grin on my face, then deal with wrenching so I can keep it there.

Yeehaawww!!!!!  8)

For somebody to sell a non-running bike this time of the year will be very hard. You have a very good oprtunity to get the bike pretty cheap. Also check the dealer price for the battery- it will be closer to $60 than to $40.
Full tune runs aprox. $150-180. Carb. clean in a shop- 1.5 X $/hr.
If this guy brings his bike in a shop to have it brought to "perfectly looking and running" condition , he is looking at ball park of $400. On top of this, he has to , spend money for an add and waste more time dealing with potential customers.
You are right there with money in Your hand.

Thanks for the heads up on the prices, slavy.

Not sure where I got the battery price. BikeBandit has it for $50. And I didn't consider shipping charges.

On the carb - called the suzuki dealership closest to home. They quoted $95 to have a carb taken apart, cleaned, and re assembled. I didn't ask about a full tune-up.

3000 miles on a 02 is like its brand new. I have a 02 in perfect condition, not even a scratch and it has almost 16,000 on it. no leaks at all and no blueing of the pipe. I wouldnt sell it if I had to take less than $2,800 for it. $3,000 might be a bit high, but you did say it came with extras, and extras for this bike is not cheap. By the way, if the battery is even just a bit low, it will not start. try this, roll it down a hill in second gear. pop the clutch and it should start right up

I'm more of the opinion that something is worth what you're willing to pay. There will be people that tell you one thing or another, but the range you're considering seems reasonable, and what's important is that YOU are comfortable with the cost, or the ride.

I, personally, would not buy something for that much money that wasn't running, despite the low mileage. Would it be worth it to you to pay to have the bike picked up by a stealership, and paying to have the carb tuned or new battery installed so you could get it started and then subtract those costs from the seller's price? You would have some kind of agreement to purchase if it starts and is okayed by the mechanic. Kind of like buying a house where the furnace needs replacing and the cost is subtracted from the price. I think you'll really like the Savage as a first post-MSF bike.

yea i agree, it worth what sombody will pay. but keep in mind I payed  1500 2 weeks ago for a 96. its not perfect. but its got all the after market stuff i wanted, and it runs great... Im painting it soon, i work at  a body shop so i can paint it  for next to nothing... ill  try and keep you posted....  how can i post pics..?

D*mn... Savage_Rob's got ESP or sumethin.....

Went and look at it again today. Just like the owner said - he got it running. It was running and in the driveway when I got there. I asked him if it started well when warm. He shut it off, and started it right up again.

There's more gold on the exhaust than I could see when it was in the barn.

So here's the specs:
2002 Savage.
2900 miles
Windsheild
Saddlebags
bike cover

$2,400   ;D

Oh - and the specs on me:
35, wife, 2 small kids.
0 riding miles under my a$$
Dad used to take me for rides on his '75 Honda CB750 all the time when I was a kid. It was the only way to get to soccer practice! He just traded a Harley sportster 1200 for a GoldWing.

I'm taking the MSF Beginning rider course this weekend. A new bike aquaintance is going with me to pick the bike up in his trailer next weekend.

I'm thinking of holding off on the carb & exhaust mods until this winter. They say most bike accidents by newbies occur because they lose control of the bike. Apparently many of these accidents happen on bikes with more gumption than a newbie should be on in the first place.

I figure I'll keep it underpowered until my riding improves. Then I'll just improve the bike instead of trading for something else.

Not bad for a days work.  8)

Great start- after msf, ride and ride some more..don't bother with much in the way of
modifcations..concentrate on developing your riding skills.  If you still love it come Fall, and 1K miles or so..then plan yur mods, save your money and make big hints around XMas time..Just think, a whole new area of Xmas gifts your fam can work on getting you. :D
So if you get it, and the price doesn't seem too out of line given bags and windshield, let us know.

$2400!   You did good.

*ALL* motorcycles have more gumption than a newbie should be on in the first place.  I popped a wheelie on my Honda 50 with my sister on the back -- when the front wheel touched back down I had no passenger.

Your major danger point is three-six months from the start of riding.  That's when you begin to be confident and start pushing the limits.  The limits do not push back, they slap.

Defensive riding is very similar to defensive driving -- keep your 2 second clear forward space, sharp attention four seconds forward, scan as far as you can see for developing situations.   Keep an eye to the rear.  Check every intersection for those ignoring traffic controls.  Trust no one.  If you've been driving a cage accident free you got most of it down already -- the only new thing with a motorcycle is (1) some people will not see you and (2) if you have a collision you will get hurt to some, hopefully small, extent.

IMHO - After your MSF class, follow their instructions (at least what I was told in class): get the Savage out onto a safe flat area with nothing to run into or over and practice - start right back at the beginning with rocking the MC. It will handle different than the MC's in the class. Slowly acclimate yourself to riding on the street and in traffic.

I suggest that you get some miles under your belt (>1000) before you start modifying (otherwise you may end up doing things over - which is OK if that's what you like). My modification after about 6K miles and the weather turning colder was to get another MC. I still ride my Savage, but only when the weather is warm and I'm not going far.

Have fun and keep the rubber side down. Don't get complacent that's how the shiny side gets down. I recently set my Concours down on it's side (first time) because I forgot to check if the side stand was down. No damage, but a real reminder to pay attention.

I'd agree with the above, though I'd recommend the basic seat mod before getting too many miles under your @ss as those miles will be easier on your nads if you do.  It may fart enough that you'll decide to at least play with the idle mixture screw.  However, that can be done without taking anything apart.  In fact, it's one of the few things you can do without removing the seat and tank.  Congratulations and keep the rubber side down!

Congratulations on your new ride. That's a good price. The bikes run decent in stock form if you can stand the popping on deacceleration. You should be in no hurry to do some mods.

Ride easy at first - around a parking lot or around your neighborhood. Gradually work up to longer rides. Ride safe and very defensively. Watch the cars on the road very carefully and keep your distance. Be especially careful when approaching intersections. I usually "cover" my front brake when approaching intersections with any cars around.

And most important - enjoy your new bike  :)

+1 to what Savage_Rob said.

I don't consider adjustments to be modifications. I among others have been able to reduce the backfire to almost zero by just adjusting the bike "correctly." Some people probably consider rejetting the carb to also be tuning rather than modification. It wasn't necessary to remove the objectionable backfire for me.

Congratulations. You got a GREAT deal. Seriously. And welcome to the club. Speaking as a newbie, I say pay attention to everything the veterans here say about riding and trusting no one and pretending to be invisible at all times, because it's all true.  Don't feel you have to drive fast; enjoy cruising at a moderate pace. It still feels a lot faster than the same 30 mph in a car. Practice in the safest and least threatening environments. Work on control. You want to be able to manage braking, shift, turning and accelerating without thinking, because you want to be constantly scanning the road for problems. Again, good luck, have fun and ride safe.

p.s. the vets are also absolutely correct that you have plenty of time for the mods, though I will say that the simple seat mod, which I did this winter, really did improve ridability with my stock Savage seat.

I read somewhere that a high percentage of car/bike collisions are the car turning left in front of a motorcycle. I flip my light dim-bright a few times when I have a car that could turn in front of me. Watch out for rocks and /or gravel in the road, they can be tricky in a turn.
I always wear a fullface helmet and a bike jacket with skid protection, and leather gloves.

If I understand correctly, that's from the famous Hurt report. Pretty serious stuff.

My comment about newbie accidents probably wasn't correct. I'm just spouting off stuff I've read elsewhere - and I've been reading everything I could get my hands on. Maybe I should have said "a lot of newbies wipe out 'cause they had more bike than they knew how to handle".

I like the idea of flicking on your high beams to grab the attention of oncoming left-turners. And don't worry 'bout the gear. I'ts not the most stylish black leather yet, but I've picked out my helmet, jacket, pants, boots & gloves. Just waiting to pass the class before I buy 'em.
