Title: Stalling problem Post by Topi on 02/28/06 at 16:18:11 Hi Experts! - Just got a Savage that'd been sitting for 3 years. It starts and idles fine but stalls on the road after 2-3 blocks. It starts to run rich (plug coal black) and dies. After a while it starts and does the same. - I've cleaned the tank, changed gas, blown the carb jets clean and replaced the spark plug. - Needle valve doesn't seem to stick so fuel level's ok. - Choke's not on. - Air filter's new. - Still the same problem. - What should I do next? - Thanks! PS. I'm good car mechanic but learning about bikes. |
Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by SeeAPierce on 02/28/06 at 17:41:14 Do you know the previous owner and if so did they make any changes? Is it a stock muffler? Has it been re-jetted? Does it also stall while at idle for a couple minutes, or can it sit at idle for a while without stalling? Have no fear - this list can help you figure this out! |

Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by Reelthing on 02/28/06 at 18:44:47 If it's been sitting for 3 years that carb could use a good cleaning top to bottom I bet, say if the the slide in the carb is dirty/sticky it will sure do that as it would drop back down and close off the main jet, there's a vac hose that runs from the right(starboard) side of the carb to the back side of the fuel petc0ck, be a good idea to take it lose and see if it has gas in it - another not too nice thing if it does. Me I'd pull the silde and clean that area real good. Welcome to the zoo! |

Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by slavy on 03/01/06 at 07:56:04 If it is running so very rich and there is no problem with the air, there are 2 possible reasons - either it is getting too much gas thru the intake manufold, either there is a lot of gas in the oil. If You haven't replaced the oil- do it. Check the vac. line for gas leak in the intake manuf. Usually the reason is the carb. There is an O-ring between the brass float valve and the carb. body and this O-ring starts leaking. Remove the float . Unscrew the little screw that holds the brass piece. Pull the fl. valve out and make sure everything is clean.Replace the O-ring. Assemble back and try. |
Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by Savage_Rob on 03/01/06 at 08:10:35 Oh yeah, it's worth checking to be sure the brass washer/spacer that was installed with the main jet is actually still there. It's been known to cause similar problems. What have I done? (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1123171986) |
Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by HDI_IA on 03/01/06 at 10:44:45 Topi I see your profile lists you as being in Los Angeles....I'm over in Torrance and have had a lot of recent experience with taking these carbs apart, cleaning (boiling) them and getting them back up and running (So far a Savage and 3 Intruder's carbs with rejetting on a couple as well).... Anyway if your stuck let me know and maybe we can get this resolved for you real quick like. |
Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by Topi on 03/02/06 at 16:38:39 - Problem solved! Thank to everybody for ideas. - BTW - It was greased main jet piston! Somebody, unqualified, did a bad "tune-up", I guess. - This vacuum piston works best when bone dry. Now the throttle return is quick and no more loading up, stalling and wet plug. |
Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by Reelthing on 03/02/06 at 16:44:33 so the slide had been greased? |
Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by Topi on 03/02/06 at 17:04:51 Your advice about cleaning the slider was right on the money! - Yes, I found clean white vaseline on the piston... |

Title: Re: Stalling problem Post by Savage_Rob on 03/02/06 at 18:11:38 Wow, what a lame deal. That's one to remember though. |
