Title: Removing the left side engine cover help?
Post by theikeman on 02/27/06 at 21:31:49

Ok, I need to replace the two starter gears which were removed by the PO, I have removed all the bolts except the one on the bottom which is of course behind the kickstand and not acessable. The direction in the clymer make no sense.
Help?
Hopefully step by step.
Thanks
Ike ???

If I remember corectly, You have to remove the side stand assy. The way I remember it, I tied a rope on the handle-bars and to a pole and leaned the bike slightly to the left. This way the rope was doing the job of the sidestand. There are 3 points holding the sidestand assy- 2 engine bolts and 1 bolt /14 mm wrench/ from under the engine.
You will have to disconnect the gear shifter too.

Ike...I was able to loosen my kick stand and pull it away enough to remove the side cover...But when you get it off look carefully at the case where the 2 gears ride...The 87 model has a tendency to break the case and you will have to have it welded up and redrilled...    Sux

Well, I got the left cover off with your kind help and YES, one of the darn starter gear mounts inside is broken. Both on the cover are ok. What is an easy fix (if any) short of replacing the block??? ???

Same as my 87, It was welded up in place and redrilled....Seems to be holding up so far...

That sounds like the way to go.

I decided to try a different approach to this issue. I bought a "stick" of J-B Weld, mixed (kneaded) it until it was a uniform color then pressed it in place in three layes with the sleeve intact. I think it will work and hold. Pictures as soon as it's cured and done.
FYI

I have used JB Weld before with some success on non-stressed areas.  The difficulty I had was with the adhesion  issue on something under stress.  If you can make it stay put then it may work for you.

You could drill the mount a bit and put a longer axle in to give the gear a bit more support. Read this on a Japanese site which I cannot find anymore, sorry.
