Post by Chris Scheurmier on 02/27/06 at 07:42:24

I cannot remove the oil drain plug.  It will not even budge.  Could someone help me out please?

Hi Chris,

In Australia we have a spray called RP7, it loosens rusty frozen and sticky parts and it works a treat. Just apply the spray and then wait 2mins before putting a wrench on the oil drain plug.

Cheers from Aussie Savage

In the US the best penetrating oil I've found is PB Blaster. You can find it at most auto parts stores.

The best wrench you can use is a 6 point socket on a breaker bar. It's much easier to strip the bolt head with 12 point.

Mine hasn't yet - just some goopy looking stuff

Mine got next to nothing.  There was a small "blob" (slightly smaller than a green pea in size) of oil and what is probably very fine metal powder.  I assume that's the goopy stuff Reelthing spoke of.

that was it - must be some ferris metal in there some where - little magnet is fairly stout - believe some of the higher end/exotics cars are now using these in the oil filter

I've seen some aftermarket inserts for some canister type filters but I think the plug is the best we can get for the Savage.

How about this...I was in Radio Shack looking for some #4 washer for my white spacer project and saw those rare earth magnet (real small powerful round magnet, for $1.99 each if I remember correctly), now if I stick one of them on the end of the old drain plug and screw it in, that would works the same, no?

And if it comes off the plug inside the engine?  Not sure I'd want to see those results...

Good point...but since the drain plug should be at a low point in the engine case, I doubt that the oil flow current has that much force to be able to displace this strong magnet, and if it does, the magnet will just stick to the inside of the case.  Still risky all the same... ;D

What part of the aluminum case is it going to stick too?

That was my thought too...

IMHO, anything that is subject to floating around in the crankcase freely that isn't supposed to be there is simply asking for disaster somewhere down the line.

That's the kind of  magnet I used for the installation of the bicycle speedo.

yup same magnet I used too.  If it wont come off the wheel when Im going 80 so I doubt it will come off the plug.  But a sudden pothole and who knows.  I dont think its worth the risk personally.

Received it today. Quick response. Very satisfied.

I've received saddlebags from willie max and oil filters from a supplier. Still waiting on the drivers backrest I ordered from another supplier and the S40 to be accessorized and ready for pick-up from the dealer. Then...

Especially when the magnetic drain plug is only $9.

Got my magnetic oil plug today as well.  Fast service and a great price.  Looking forward to getting to Maine this summer, taking the old girl out of storage and do the "white spacer mod, main jet change, K&N, Progressive shocks, Supertrapp, Super Brace and perhaps an aux. gas tank so she will have longer legs"  What a great summer I'm going to have!

I put a dab of 2 component epoxy glue on and around the magnet, just to make sure it stays in place.
Last 3000km it held perfectly.
