Title: Tires...
Post by 911radioman on 02/26/06 at 15:56:09

How many of you buy your tires elsewhere and install them yourself?

How many of you take your ride somewhere and let somebody else mess with doing your tires?

I bought my tires online and brought the wheel/rim to a place and had them mount the new ones. If i had a set of tools for tires, i would attempt the front tire and maybe the rear, but i dont at the moment and it was convenient to have someone else do it... of corse it was 30 a tires since they are spoked and have tubes....  Maybe next time ill buy those tools

i bought the rear tire from there, which is the correct front tire if i order a k555 from them?

just realized that they only offer one k555 front tire, well then i guess my question is, is that the correct one?

Try American Motorcyle Tire for a better deal. I'm going to take both my wheels off and have a pro mount and balance them.

My problem around here is there are no independent bike shops, only dealers.  The dealers all want $50 per wheel if I take the bike to them, $25 if I take the wheels in to them to mount/balance.

So, I guess I'm wondering just how big of a deal it is to do them myself...

You can mount the tires with two big screwdrivers, (remember your bicycle days?) but they need to be balanced on a machine.

I read somewhere that you can balance it your your self. But where will I get the weights to clamp them on where it is needed; so I think that hand over the dough and let the pro do it  :)

The one displayed in the link is the wrong size for the front. The F24 is the correct size, 100/90-19.

When finding a place to have them mounted it goes without saying to check around.  Three different shops quoted me $60 to mount and balance even with the wheels already off.  The shop I took them to did it for $20, and is the only place around here that will mount them for free if you buy the tires at their shop.

$25 a piece to have them mounted and balanced is not a bad deal.

Interesting question.

I have a 100/90 on the '02 and a 110/90 on the '95.
The 110 Metz 880 certainly fills up the fender and do not know if other brands will fit or not. The interesting part comes in with regard to the effects of your brakes.
The taller 110 has more leverage against the rotor so it takes more pressure to slow it down than the 100 and it weights more, however it is spinning slower than the 100 and has a larger contact patch so can put more pressure on the 110 with out a skid if your brakes can do it. The savage the front brake is a bit under sized by modern standards so if your going to the 110 you should also upgrade the brakes I believe.

Seems to me the bike handles better and looks better with the 110 but this may just be mental.

hmm well i dont think brakes are in the funds right now, id rather spend the money on progressives haha so ill think ill stick to the 100/90

thanks for the information that helped shed a little light on the comparison between the two sizes

Oh - if that's the choice - no doubt about it - stock tire size and correct progressive shocks - you bet!

and will likely wink at girls and have one on the back of the bike at times -

ok all things considered the 11" 412-4233c's 115/155lb are perfect for you.

Good choice.  Patience, Grasshopper.
