Title: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/23/06 at 16:03:31 Well it only took a week or so to get them - it seems to be just badged by them it's really a Deka power sports battery made by East Penn it's a ETX15L AGM CCA 190. Size wise it's an exact match - does not have a vent pipe and terminal mounts are much heavier so I had to bend the inside edge flat so it would bolt down. Man did the '02 fire right up - it's usually a bugger to start as the battery would lose charge fairly fast - it measures 12.27 volts and new Bigcrank measured 12.99 volts out of the box. I'm more convinced than ever - that if our batteries are not very hot then our ign system just doesn't work correctly. Rather handsome http://www.savageriders.com/reelthing/pics/savage/bat1.JPG http://www.savageriders.com/reelthing/pics/savage/bat2.JPG |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Ed_L. on 01/23/06 at 16:31:09 Look at the size of the terminals on that baby. darn, just replaced the battery last fall on my scoot or it would be on top of my wish list ;). |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Greg_650 on 01/24/06 at 06:34:53 I'd buy that battery for the name alone. Now you truely can say, "I got a Big Crank". |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/24/06 at 08:28:50 and big terminals! |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Greg_650 on 01/24/06 at 08:33:38 Gotta love it ;D |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/25/06 at 07:18:28 interesting chart came with it - i have seen these numbers before but here goes.... open circuit voltage.........state of charge ........12.80 or greater............100% ...............12.60.....................75% ...............12.30.....................50% ...............12.00.....................25% ...............11.80......................0% The actual stabilized OCV can only be determined after the battery has been disconnected from the charger for 24 hours. just checked - both of these new batteries this morning are 12.57 volts or ~ 75% charged |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by pgolden on 01/25/06 at 07:34:21 Where'd you get 'em and how much were they? |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/25/06 at 08:46:35 bigcrank.com around $50 - looks like batterymart.com just drop ships them for these folks - same price |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by BS37066 on 01/25/06 at 14:09:39 Huh? Lead storage batteries are taught in every beginning chemistry class: 2.2 volts per cell. Six cells is 13.2 volts. Reelthing wrote:

Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/25/06 at 14:40:10 that's the chart that came with them and it looks like a pretty normal range if you search on - open circuit voltage - ocv - our learned 13v+ seems to be how it acts under charge/discharge not after it sets for 24hrs |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Curz on 01/25/06 at 16:46:00 Which is more important... Cold crank amps or the Amp hour rating? Im looking at the YTX14AHL-BS High performance maintenance free because I can get it locally and save the shipping from the US.(extra $20-$50 depending on speed) But I notice it has a higher CCA of 210 but the amp hour is less than stock at 12 AH. Any thoughts? http://www.yuasabatteries.com/yuasa05/vehicle_search.asp |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/25/06 at 18:59:20 Sorta like width(cca) vs. depth (ah) since you don't normally need a long period of cranking to start a savage i can't see where a 12 vs. 14 would make much difference - if anything the higher cca would be better to supply the starter, decompress, and picky ign module enough to fire properly. |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Paladin on 01/25/06 at 19:24:47 I'll second the CCA being of greater worth. The CCA is how hard the battery will crank, the AH is how long it will crank. I only crank a half second or so. My logic is that there is a decompression solenoid to allow the engine to crank easy to a reasonable rpm. But as long as the decompression solenoid is operated you have no compression to fire the engine. Therefore the engine should fire upon the release of the starter when the engine is spinning by momentum and the compression is there to make it pop. |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by RadarORiley on 01/26/06 at 12:09:05 So now Reelthing has a "Thumper with a Big Crank". Sounds like T-Shirt material to me ;D |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/26/06 at 12:10:29 got two ! |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by RadarORiley on 01/26/06 at 12:32:46 Thumpers or T-Shirts? |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/26/06 at 13:10:34 pair of thumpers with big cranks |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by RadarORiley on 01/26/06 at 14:06:05 We have good batteries on both of our bikes, but I have filed the information for future use. Is this a battery that I'd still have to add water to from time to time? |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/26/06 at 14:10:53 No way to do it is sealed |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by RadarORiley on 01/26/06 at 14:24:55 Since it's a real b1tch to put water in my sweet little hubby would probably spring for a couple of them today. He says it's funny, he never rides the thing but when it needs work we sure want him around. Are they only available online? |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by SAMM on 01/26/06 at 15:48:21 Men or Batterys ?? |

I bet someplace has a sealed - dont know about the agm ones though - but from their website to my door was about a week via ups - not bad |

Now SAMM, I have all the man I can handle. Went through too many to get to him to change now. But I might be interested in a new man for #2 daughter, she's moving out this weekend, single in 2 months, God willing & the creek don't rise. She even owns her own bike.Savage of course. So if you find a good website where I can order a good man let me know. Few requirements: must ride, must work, Drink JD, but not to excess, and love redheads ;) |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by SAMM on 01/26/06 at 17:07:14 My 27 year old son moved home a year ago and he is still here !!! To bad the commute is so far or he would take you up on the daughter !! I love my son dearly but its time to go out in the real world again....... |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/26/06 at 17:25:06 deal or no deal? |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Kaishaku on 01/26/06 at 22:07:22 Wait, who doesn't love redheads? ??? |

Ah....well....ah... my last Ex was a redhead. But that can't apply here 'cause you like "mature" men 8) |

"mature" - now I believe the endearing phrase was fully grown out or up something like that |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by RadarORiley on 01/27/06 at 07:49:10 Well SAMM, she might just take you up on the offer, but she has sons almost that old ;D Of course her sister who is now 43 is married to a great young man (32).She's the one who bought her new young hubby an Ironhorse. #2 Daughter will be a great catch for someone, has good job, her own bike and will inherit good $tuff. |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/27/06 at 08:24:12 well now let's talk about this inherence ... how much how soon ;) |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by RadarORiley on 01/27/06 at 09:30:09 Well, as for how soon, they told me about 5 years max in 1985. Still here, thank God & prednisone. as for inheritance, she's one of three, to divide assorted properties, jewelry, gun collections, oil/gas wells, cars, boats, houses and my Li'l Sumbeach motorcycle.Plus what I haven't spent from my Dad's estate. None of them will have to worry about much if they can just keep Me from spending it first :D I keep teasing them about their Dad's next wife but they don't think that's a funny joke. >:( |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/27/06 at 11:24:26 sounds too complex - think i'll stay put :) seen many a bumper sticker on class a motorhomes towing some kind of cage - even saw one the other day pulling a trailer w/a couple HDs saying something about spending the kids inheritance- sounds good to me! |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by RadarORiley on 01/27/06 at 11:50:24 Well, I've done the motorhome thing, decided I didn't like that so bought another house. I'm trying like he77 to spend it all. Told #2 today I was trolling for her another guy, thought she was going to stroke ;D They are starting to move her things now, think I'll stay in where it's warm. That way is Mr. A$$hole shows up I won't be tempted to blow him away. I've had a picture of him on my target range for over a year and you'd be surprised what that will do for your aim. |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by bikingb on 01/28/06 at 19:42:49 does not have a vent pipe and terminal mounts are much heavier so I had to bend the inside edge flat so it would bolt down. I am wondering if it doesn't have a vent pipe because it is sealed. Was is difficult to attach the terminals once you bent them down? I'm seriously thinking about buying one of these. Thank you. |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/28/06 at 21:13:15 once the inside edge was bent up so it would lay on top of the terminal it fit's real fine - yes, sealed no external vent tube |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by bikingb on 01/29/06 at 11:23:03 Found one in town!!! Called a power sport made for fleet farm. It has the same ID number ETX15L. Figure I paid a $ 10 premium for getting it on Sunday to get my bike out of the garage and back home before it freezes up again in Wisconsin. Works Great!! |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/29/06 at 13:10:35 That's good - you know as big as houston is i can rarely if ever find stuff like this - yep these are shipped in powersport boxes - it's the same thing they're just swaping stickers |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Mr 650 on 01/30/06 at 19:45:07 YO, Reeler, Thanks for the heads up. Just put the Yuasa (dry) that was given to me almost 2 years ago, in the LS650 last month as had just wrung the last breath of life from that original cell. However the battery in the new PC800 was weak, so I jumped on your advice and ordered the BC for the Pacific Coast and a Battery Tender too. I must admit my ol trickle charger is dead and the "smart" BT is the way to go, so now I have a BIG CRANK for my PC 800. I wish I could say it was now a PC 1000!! ;D https://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?lang=-1&catalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=12261 We have used these Odyssey batteries and they are amazing in their ability to crank & run 15:1, 532 " motor. Down side is they give no warning to failure. Always carry 2 of them. I wish I could say it was now a PC 1000!! ;D |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by diesel on 01/30/06 at 21:27:56 how do you like the way honda buried that battery in that PC 800? da%% good place for a maintance free battery. |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 01/31/06 at 05:37:45 I think the next round of boat batteries will be the odysseys at least on the high drain one that runs the electronics. Hey how you like'n the pc800 streamliner ? |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by Reelthing on 02/05/10 at 00:23:56 OK - longer term test - At the time I started this thread I ordered a pair of these agm Bats - seems I now have a weak one in the '02 hot rod savage - the one the '95 seems as strong as the day I got it - hot charge and over night with no charge to bled off the float it holds 12.8v - but the one in the hotrod only holds 12.3-12.4v - this will crank a savage but likely will not start it |
Title: Re: New Bigcrank Battery Post by thumperclone on 02/05/10 at 06:55:43 so 48 months?? that dont sound bad for a bike battery.. |
