Title: Another oil change question
Post by Panther on 12/30/05 at 15:04:27

My '06 S40 is 1,700+ miles, is it time for its second oil change? First one was at its first 1,000. I also got the filter, but in the store the salesman told me that it doesn't need it to be changed that soon. Help! Thanks!

'06 owners book maint. schedule (page 7-4 if you have it handy) claims you only need oil changed again at 4000 miles or 12 months. :)

I would change it more often than once a year.  Depending on how often you drive is the key.

I would change it every 2000-2500 miles.  I would think at least twice a year.

$10 worth of oil + filter every 3 months(who cares what the mileage is) or $1,000 or more + no bike for a while.
You decide!*#
I read somewhere before stated that the oil inside your engine will turn acidic after months of chemical reaction and heat. It's very slowly eating away components inside. Whether all that is true or not, I use that as an excuse to go to the garage and change the oil and most importantly have a test ride ;D.

I agree with SD.  They put those acid absorbers in oil for some reason.

Change the oil often when the bike is new and still breaking in. As it's wearing in there's lots of metallic particles floating around. After it has some miles on it, change the oil every 2000 - 3000 miles.

Hi Panther,

I change my oil every 1,000 miles and the filter every 4,000miles.
I feel if I keep doing this I will get longer mileage out of the savage engine. Oil tends to thin out quickly in these small motors.

Good if you do the oil changes yourself and they are  easy to do as well..

oh and oil is cheap in Australia :)

Cheers Gary

I have one in mine but it's the first time and I don't know if it's any better than OEM.  For good reading on oil related matters, I have found Bob Is The Oil Guy (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/) to be very interesting.

Thanks to all you guys and girls for the input. As for the manual, the bike didn't come with one, so if anyone knows how I can get one on the web or something like that, let me know. As for the oil, my bike gets a ride almost every day, with an ocasional long trip, so I guess I'll wait for the next thou to change it.

For an owner's manual, eBay or the dealership are the only places I know of.  For a maintenance manual, try this:
