Title: White Spacer Again
Post by SAMM on 12/14/05 at 14:52:06

I have a 1987 Savage and just did the white spacer mod.. Filed the spacer a little more than 1/2 off. At the same time found a pluged jet. Also removed the idel mixture screw plug and backed it out an extra turn.. What a dif it makes in the way it runs !!  My only question is With the stock exaust I get a puff of black smoke just off idel..Should I add to the white spacer or wait till I change the exaust when I get a Harley mufler down the road??...I also still get a bang out the tail pipe on shut down..  But no more backfire on decel.  It runs 3 times better than it did !!

you might want to get the harley pipe and a few of the cheap spark plugs - they'll tell you which way to go - may have the idle mixture a little rich

The little puff of black smoke just off idle is from a momentary slightly rich condition, but this is from the pilot circuit, not the midrange, so don't try to correct this with the white spacer on the needle.  This is corrected with the pilot adjusting screw/& or jet.  Go ahead and get the sportster muffler...you will like the result, after you rejet again of course.
