Title: What do YOU run?
Post by XxQualitySealxX on 11/29/05 at 11:50:12

Hi. I have searched through the past 500 days worth of posts and have not found a thread about the different models of tires. What have you had experience with or currently run and what do you like about them. I hear lots of things about lots of tires but I wanted to know how our bike does with them and not some 800 pound 1600cc cruiser.

I have Metzler ME-880's on my Fathers Savage and on my Intruder vs800 and love them. I ride the canyons here in SoCal hard with my 800 and they hold really well.

I have about 5K on mine right now and I have many friends that have put about 15K on them without any problems.

Hope that helps a bit

I have the Dunlop 404. They are unstable at recommended pressure and wear too fast. The Metzler is a very good choice.

I have a Dunlop D404 on the rear, about 5K miles on it, still looking good.  I have another that I need to put on the front before the rain comes.

I ride Dunlop Qualifiers front and rear. Have about 8,000 miles on them with very little wear.  Also, it seems to me that they ride better, have better grip, and are generally more stable when inflated to about 36 psi.

Metz ME880 on the '95 and still the factory IRCs on the '02 - both will have new me880's as soon as they need them - work very well.

Totally unrelated to the Savage, I run dunlop GPR 70 SP's, 110/70/17 front and 140/70/17 rear.

I've got the Dunlop 491 Elite II in the front, and a metzler ME 880 in the rear.... The dunlop seems to be holding up very well.  The Metler is too new to see how well it wears, but on my V* 1100, I seem to piss through the rear tires, and I don't do burnouts.  I will probably try the 491s on my V* next time I swap both.

I got a used (nearly new) dunlop off ebay for $40 and a brand new kenda for a little more - seem fine - sure beats the 16 year old rubber that was on there!

Thanks alot for all the help. I am needing new tires before the rain season and all the info I can get is helpful. Is there anyone else in here that is using the Savage as their only means of transportation?

Well I can't call it only - but mostly - and caught in the rain is part of the "charm"  - if the lightning is carry on I'll park it - if the question is wet road handleing the me880's grip as well as I can use - of course follow the rules - slow down, when it first starts wait for the oil to wash away, stay off the paint, out of the middle and off the greasy spots.

And dont forget Manhole Covers :-/ (dont ask me how I know :o)

The Metz are good in the rain, but I have heard that Avon Venom X's are superior to just about anything for rainy weather (and hard canyon cruising as well). They cost more, wear out a little quicker, but stick like glue even when it is very cold out.

Hope that helps you a bit more. I would have probably said something about the Avon's earlier, but didn't factor the rain into this.

Savage: IRC front (free) and a ChengShin rear.

Intruder 800: Kenda front (Dunlop 404 clone) and Dunlop Qualifier (old pattern) rear.

Kawi Vulcan 800A: Dunlop 404 front and rear.

IRC is garbage, only installed it because I ws broke and already had it off a Heise forum member's deceased bike.

ChengShin only lasted 7000 miles.

Kenda is alright, not good, not bad, just a tire.

Qualifier with the figure 8 tread blocks sucks.

404s, no complaints.
