Title: My '81 Virago Project
Post by Ryan G (RG) on 11/25/05 at 12:32:24

Hey everyone.  I've made a couple posts about my Virago project.  Well, we've run into quite a problem.  We wanted to remount the ignition under the seat.  We had a perfect place for it and everything.  We cut the wires, spliced in the new ones, turned the key to "on" . . . and nothing.  Crap.  Check all the connections, they're fine.  Still nothing.  Okay, splice the ignition back to the original wires to make it all original.  Still nothing.  Check all the fuses (should have done that first) but they're all fine.  Check the connections again, make sure all the correct wires are lined up.  They are.  Still nothing.  Anyone have any ideas for me?  Thanks.

Ignition switch?  Is the switch housing part of the ground circuit?

Yeah, it's an old ignition.  Any reason why it would have just gone out all of the sudden?  I'm not sure if it's part of the ground circuit.  We don't have the manual for the bike.

Describe "nothing" ???- There is no power going to anything or there is power going to the dash lights but You push the start button and nothing happens or You push the start button , the bike cranks , but it doesn't start :'(.

Nothing, nada, zero, zip, zilch.  I turn the key and no power goes anywhere to anything--dash doesn't light up, tail light doesn't turn on, nothing.  It's quite sad.

probably the battery, the regulator or just a fuse or so...

Check the ground wire and the battery terminals. Luck with it

MAIN FUSE. When You take a look at the battery, there will be 2 red wires from the "+". Follow the thinner one. Tnere will be a housing and inside will be Your main fuse.

Thanks guys.  I'll take a look and see if I can find that fuse.  It's not any of the fuses in the main fuse box, I checked those.  And it's not the battery or the terminals, those are all fine.  Thanks again.

Again- follow the thinner red wire. There will be a separate fuse holder / most of the times it is white plastic tube/, and the main fuse is inside.
