Title: How long does a belt last??
Post by jimbrough on 11/07/05 at 12:29:18

Just wondering if anybody has any idea - mine has nearly 15000km. on it and still looks good - not really been abused or anything...should I look at replacing it soon?  I hear they're $400 north of the border!!

They are expensive but if you'll watch ebay a good deal on a lower mileage belt can be had.

Mine had a few holes punched through it by small rocks and some age/wear cracks - but even at that and with >22k miles I believe it would go a lot more miles and has been retained as a spare.

I have read you are likely to wear out the rear sprocket before the belt - but in my case it was the front spline teeth that wore out first due to lack of proper torque on the retaining nut.

So new front sprocket ($54) used like new rear sprocket ($25) and used like new belt ($60-70) - properly installed and maintained I look for these to last >30k miles.

Are those sprockets easy to replace?  Also, Reelthing, is there any way to make the belt last longer?  IE: fewer downshifts?

Thanks, man! :)

Speaking of front sprockets, can you get one that has fewer teeth?  I am thinking of putting a trike kit on my S40 and would like a slightly lower gear ratio.  I have done this often with my dual purpose machines, but this is mt first belt drive bike.

Sprockets are both easy - got to pull the rear wheel and port side shock - keeping the belt inline proper and not quite as tight as the book calls for - just be able to twist it 90deg - as for as I have read no replacements to change the ratio - there are chain conversions possible i believe that would let you mess with the tooth count - but then you have a chain to maintain.

Oh yea and stay out of the gravel!

Mine has 34K KM and is still looking Oke. Clean it regulary with my wives toothbrush, rinse, dry and lubricate with talcumpowder. Keep it properly aligned and the belt should last at least 60KKM.

Title: drive belt sprockets
Post by James on 11/09/05 at 16:27:59

Hey, New guy here.
My older borther is rebuilding a 86 Savage for my first bike.  The previous owner did convert it to a chain drive (what possessed them to do that is beyond me). Anyway,  if anyone has a rear drive belt sprocket (and or maybe a front) please let me know.
You email me direct at wesmj@juno.com

Look forward to joining the ranks of Savages!
Thanks,

Thanks,

Welcome aboard.  You may want to post that as a "Wanted" in The Marketplace but you'll probably be wise to watch eBay.
