Title: British Weather. Trouble starting your Savage?
Post by hoohootribe on 10/27/05 at 09:19:53

I posted a message a while ago asking for help as bike problems starting and running in the rain. I'm pleased to say the solution was a simple one!!!

I changed the SPARK PLUG CAP!!! (Cheap and easyish)

Apparently the original caps are renound for developing invisible hair-line fractures that cause a short in the electrics if water is added (e.g rain).
Sorry if this is like teaching your granny to suck eggs for those of you with vast knowledge. I thought it might be useful for our U.K newbies

Thanks, I haven't heard of that problem before.  Great info.

I find it kinda incredible that water can even get in there cuz everything is so tight!

Shouldn't be surprised, though, after building a couple of houses.  Have seen water run UPHILL!

Thanks for the tip.

did you use an universal cap, or did a standard water-tight cap fit in that narrow space where the spark plug is hid?

Hey, thanks for the advice, see the 'Bike won't start' thread. Apparently even moisture is bad enough...

Will investigate

I disassembled the coil and HT lead from the electrical sistem and from the frame (two 8mm bolts and two spade connectors) but the HT lead seems to be vulcanized to the coil itself.
Is this correct, or is it just a super tight fit?
If I pull hard, will it come out or break?
How can I change the spark plug cap if it's all glued together?

Maurizio
