Title: Handlebar Speedo
Post by Ryan G (RG) on 10/21/05 at 01:49:10

Hey everyeone.  I'm an ex-Savage owner and have a question for you all.  (I'm actually number 20 in the poster's picture gallery; Ryan G--blue/silver savage).  I know Savage owners are the best people out there, so I thought I'd come here first to ask.  My buddy just got an 81 Yamaha Virago and we're looking to do some work on it.  We're looking for a handlebar-mounted speedo (one that'll look decent, but not cost too much; I think I may have heard of people using bicycle speedos before).  Anyone know where I can get one?  Thanks!

If anyone's looking for an old bike to fix up, the Virago is perfect.  It's got some great potential.  It's a v-twin 750, rear mono-shock, pretty good overall lines (especially after we redo the seat), and a heck of a lot of fun to work on.

By the way, I've got an Intruder 1400 now.  Holy crap.  I love it.  I'll always love the Savage though, and I'm sure I'll have one again someday.  I sure miss tinkering around with it.

Thanks for all your help, guys.

The one I've heard of folks using is a Sigma.

All u need is some special "earth" magnets from Radio Shack that I just stick on the rim with some epoxy or something.

I am using a universial speedometer with a tripometer that I traded a set of HD buckhorn bars for.  In order to mount the speedo on the handlebars I purchased a 10" cable extension from www.workingclasschopper.com

Now I hope to have the flexiblity to mount a bigger gas tank something along the lines of a one piece 3.5 gallons and up tank like a HD FX, I have also looked to see if the M50 Boulevard, Intruder, Marauder tanks might work.  If any of these tanks are off fuel injected bikes then they might not work.

I noticed a 3.5 gal fatbob/quickbob tank on cyclewarehouse website that looks to be close to 6" wide which is needed to mount on the stock LS650/C40 frame that starts out single tube for 5.5" then Y's to 6" for 10" to the rear tank mount.  I posted some additional comments in the Michael P. Plan

Very nice indeed! Clean, no-frills ... my fave look when it comes to motorcycles!

WOW!

How heavy does it feel?  I sat on an Intruder 1400 and it felt like it would be impossible for me to maneuver around in a parking lot.

Well, as far as bigger bikes go, it's probably the lightest one you're gonna find out there.  It's got 300cc's on the Vstar 1100 and its about 100 pounds lighter at 550 pounds (which is about 200 pounds heavier than the Savage).  I've absolutely no problems with it at all.

Here is a photo of our most popular speedo
it i available in white or black face
it has a super small 1.9" diameter face.
Our speedo extension should help in bar mounting.

I hear about people mounting bicycle speedos with a pickup on the front wheel.  Well...I had one on a bicycle once.  Not for my bike.....

I have noticed a lot of aftermarket ones....like the one shown above and I have a question or two.

For the speedo above, how do you know about having the correct gear ratio?

If it is digital (like at J&P Cycle), does it use a cable drive or is there a digital pickup to replace the cable?  And once again, what about question #1?

The mini speedos we have are geared 2.1:1 which is the proper gearing for almost all japanese motorcycles.
These are mechanical drive speedos.
If your moving your speedo you may want to remount your idiot lights, we have 3-4 options for that too.

Title: Re: Handlebar Speedo with Tripometer
Post by Aktlingit on 11/02/05 at 15:28:28

I went for a ride today with the temperature at 37 degrees with a wind chill factor of 32 what a good day.

Prior to starting my ride I looked into my gas tank to see how much fuel I might have and it looked like enough for 10 miles before having to switch over to reserve and sure enough at about 8.5 it started to sputter and I switched over to reserve.

After I fueled up it was nice to be able to reset my tripometer to zero enable to test my newly mounted universal speedometer with tripometer that I mounted to my handlebars of my 88. (Sorry no pictures yet)

The stock lower portion of the speedo cable is threaded up under the stock gas tank (hopefully to be replaced by a bigger capacity tank at least 3.5 gal or more) Due to the 10" length of the speedo cable extension (that I bought from Working Class Choppers) I had to use a V bracket (reversed with the two mounting holes pointed towards the tank) with the speedo on my side of the handlebars which could possibly bump the replacement tank if it is taller than the stock tank.

I have been researching to see what tanks out there might fit the LS650 frame that Y's out to 6" width and so far it looks like an HD fatbob, quckbob tank might work however I have not been able to locate one locally to try out.  If anyone has done so please let me know and as we all like to view please post photos.

Looking down at the speedo was very comfortable even when my face shield fogged up do to the cold.  Knowing that this speedo set up works I will mount one on my 98 as well.

I would like to thank those of you who have had various suggestions i.e. combo lock, phone photo etc. for your experience however I just like having the speedo and tripometer on the handlebars.

I have also tried various handlebars using the stock risers and have been able to replace the stock bars that measure Rise 7" Pullback 11" Center Width 5.5" Tip2Tip Width 27.5" with early HD FX, Superglide and Sportster bars measuring R 4" PB 11" CW 7" T2T 28" and HD bars PN 56081-82 $55 R 8" PB 4" CW 8.5" T2T 28", Superglide 70"s bars R 9" PB 5.5" CW 9" T2T 28.5" without having to change out any of my contorl cables.

I hope that this is some help to all of you.

Regards from Alaska
