Title: Cold weather stalling!
Post by Mrs._D on 10/04/05 at 10:07:43

I just had my Savage (2001) serviced, and am now having problems with constant stalling in the colder morning weather.  It stalls the whole way to work-very annoying- and I can't figure out why.  Any ideas?  In the afternoon it is usually fine the whole way home.
(I have been riding it for a year now, and love it!)
I am not handy enough to fix it myself, and don't want to embarrass myself by going back to the shop if it is my fault-   ???

are you using the choke when you start it first thing?

I am using the choke, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.  Friday morning, I left it on for almost the whole ride and no improvement.  (i am confused!)

not sure on that one... I 've never had to use full choke only half . even then I only use it for maybe 1 or 2 min . when they serviced it did they do anyhting to your carb?

Mrs._D, I have a half hunch the choke cable has either been detached from the carb, or it's now so slack it won't really do much.
Happened on my carburetted car, so it is quite possible

Choke cable? There is no choke cable. The choke knob is attached to the enrichment valve.

What about somthing simple like maby the idle is set too low. Try turning the small thumb screw on the left side (if you're on the seat) of the carb to increase the RPM just a little. This is meant to be an operator adjusted control so don't be afraid of it.

That may be it!  Which direction (clockwise- I guess- or countercw) do I turn the idle screw to speed it up a little?  Maybe the mechanic adjusted this, because I didn't have these problems before I brought it in.
It ran terrifically this afternoon (very warm out), after stalling in the morning.

Clockwise for a faster idle-  but just a tiny bit at a time - best to do it with it running

I had the same problem like that before, just bump up that idle adjustment up a bit. You will have higher idle in the afternoon; but at least you don't have the stalling problem in the morning.

For fall and early spring riding, I adjust this frequently.  Or you can just leave it running a little fast in the afternoon but you don't get that cool thumping idle at the traffic lights.

Bingo!  Thanks- adjusting the idle helped.  You're right though, definitely doesn't sound as cool.  (I am guessing that the mechanic, who is a Harley person, adjusted this to get the cool thumpin sound.)
I really like this forum!  ;D
