Title: Bigger fuel tank?
Post by mpescatori on 09/27/05 at 16:02:30

The savage has a 10.5 liter tank/ 2 1/4 gals - at least, here in Europe. This means I can ride an easy 100 miles before looking for a gas station, 120 maybe but then I wouldn't want to try my luck.
Problem is I commute a good 150+ miles to see my family on Friday evenings, and another 150+ on Sunday evenings to get back to work.  :(
What kind of bigger tank would you suggest?
Intruder? Other make?

Thanks all  :)

Maurizio

Heres a link to a previous post.  He changed the tank to a Maraurder tank.  It has some good pictures.

This is another one to definitely use the search engine.  This topic has been hit several times with some interesting results.  Da Queen even added a TourTank (http://www.tourtank.com/) to her bike to increase her range between stops.  Her thread (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1123620999) is a good read too.

OK I guess I'll just have to learn to use your search engine.
Still, it's nice to write and see you guys' thoughts on these issues.

I read all the related and cross-related threads until my eyes were watering... I believe I understand the principles behind the principles  ::) but just one question... I couldn't find it in any dictionary so here goes...
what exactly is the petc0ck? (I know I have to use the zero because of censorship software in the background...)
Initially I thought it was just anothe name for the fuel tap, then I realize it's on the other side AND it appears to be ... vacuum operated?
Huh?

I was pointing out that there was already a lot of info available - some may be from folks no longer on the board.  Otherwise I wouldn't have done a search myself and included the link to Da Queen's TourTank post.  Incidentally, I see they've introduced a 3.5 gallon spun aluminum version that looks very nice.

The petc0ck is the fuel valve located on the left/port side of the tank.  It is vacuum operated in the ON position.  I believe it is also vacuum operated in the RES position but I'm not sure.  PRI is not vacuum operated; it is a simple gravity feed.  These assume you haven't modified yours like in Bobo383's petc0ck conversion post (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1113631600) in the Technical Corner.

I will pick up the bike in... less than 12 hrs! ;D
Spoke to the chief mechanic, he says the engine's in good nick (good shape)  :D
but the chrome is cr4ppy :-[
and the aluminium sump looks awful  >:(
but he claims it's only cosmetic  ???
I asked about the spokes, he says the chrome is off on most  :-[
''They won't snap as I ride home?'' :'(
''No but they're in need of a VERY throrough cleanup''...

So...
.
.
.
Have I named my bike yet? Barabbas good'nuff?  8)

As for the petc0ck, I thought there was going to be a...fuel tap, hand operated, as in ''off - on - res''
So this has got me stumped ???
Unless it's one of ''them 'merican things'' and we're exempt.

I'll let you know

Maurizio
PS maybe I'm overdoing it with all these smileys...

Fuel tap has 3 positions, down is on when the engine is running. It is vacuum operated when the engine starts. Back is prime and used when the carb bowl is dry or the bike has been sitting long enough  to evaporate the fuel from the carb, forward is reserve, about 25 miles worth in my experience. Depends on how you ride and the bike. There is no manual off position. Pretty typical of Asian biles these days.

Peter the blacksmith from Finland fitted a Kawsaki KN tank I think. You may be able to find something on it on what is left of Berts site. http://www.heise-workstations.de/ls650/LS650-e.html. Max

Oooohhh... as in 'down is on, back is fast forward and back is reserve...'

Got it right?

Does this mean I've actually been riding the bike in 'prime' all this time ???

You can easily fit a VN500 tank to your Suzuki Savage, which would make your fuel capacity grow from 10,5 to a stunning 15 liters! It even looks pretty good! (Though not as good as the original tank does)

What's a vn500?  I'd love a bigger gas tank.

It does look good but is there any suzi tank that will fit that is NOT teardrop!  I'm trying to get away from the cruiser look.

Title: Re: Bigger fuel tank?
Post by Michiel Pielkenrood on 10/19/05 at 05:04:13

blasfemy!  :P ehm... I wouldn't know, you'll have to try that. You don't have to look at the old GS750 and GSX750 gastanks, I already tried those and they won't fit... maybe just try something weird like a R1 tank or so? Anything that is cheap is good, don't you think so?

Title: Re: Bigger fuel tank?
Post by jbrough7 on 10/19/05 at 07:20:35

You got that right - and it's not that I don't like the cruiser style, I do, it's just time for a change...I'm big and don't really fit my savage so I'm changing it into a cafe racer type of thing....trouble is i'm a wee scared about making PERMANENT changes in case they don't work out.

Title: Re: Bigger fuel tank?
Post by Savage_Rob on 10/19/05 at 07:53:54

I don't mind the teardrop at all but I wouldn't mind more capacity either.

Title: Re: Bigger fuel tank?

I think you should just try... there's no crying over spilt milk. And nobody ever made something really beautifull without making mistakes to get that far...

@Rob: the small fuel-capacity is annoying, isn't it  :-X :-/

I think I'm with you - I'm leaning towards ripping her apart and fleshing her out - anybody seen my grinder?

ps:  i cry over spilt milk all the time.

im planning on putting a harley sportster peanut tank on sometime,it holds 3.5 gallons, looks damm cool too 8)

Title: Re: Bigger fuel tank?
Post by mpescatori on 10/19/05 at 13:43:00

Harley peanut would be beautiful but with the prices they fetch I might as well buy myself a second Savage...
Kawa VN500 ... the tank looks mighty nice and if it IS 15 litres it's exactly what I need  ;D

Now I have to find one on eBay... addicted to it, will have to find a shrink and have him talk my way out of it... :P

By the way, Michiel, is the Vulcan tank a straight swap (replacement) or do I have to go through all sorts of contorsionism to make it fit?
I'm too old to file my fingers and grind my knuckles, I need a straight job.

And still I wonder whether any of you would pronounce my name correctly  ;D

I'm not sure about the tank, because I only heard it from other guys. A guy on the dutch motorforum said it was a direct fit, but I don't know it from hands-on-experiene, you should have to try it yourself òr post a question on www.motor-forum.nl in the "choppers" category (do I spell it correctly?). I think someone there must know... Good luck!

Michiel, I believe your name is pronounced Mi-khiel
possibly the surname is Pil-hen-rhod.

A round of Orangebitter if I got it right. 8)

Here's a thought ... a college with a sheetmetal shop and sheetmetal apprentices-in-training could likely make you a custom tank ... possibly free, since they are learning and might be interesed in taking on the project ... you could likely get a wild tank (always wondered what a chopper-style "coffin" tank would look like on the LS?), with a greater capacity, that would be a straight bolt-on! Hey, those sheetmetal students learn how to fabricate with stainless steel as well ... hmmm a stainless steel tank on a Savage ... now that's interesting too!
