There are also some before and WIP pics.

I'm hoping for some better pics this weekend if the weather holds out.

Next step will be to fab a "Y" pipe to make a 1-into-2 going from the stock header into two slash cut exhausts.

Very cool. Can you show us some pics of the underside of the tank and the mounts on the frame? Also, what speedo are you planning to use?

Sure, I'll try to get some of those pics.

As far as the speedo goes I ordered one of the bicycle ones (I don't remember the name, something 1600). If that doesn't work I'm looking at one of the Drag Specialty mini speedos with the indicator lights.

yeah its a sigma, you might wanna order a sigma light if u plan on doing any night riding. I put a led in my booklight and it works great.

To tell the truth, when it comes to bikes, I actually prefer analog. I am interested in the tank conversion though. I wouldn't mind greater range.

OK here is how I changed the tank:

After tear down:

1) Cut off the front tank mounts making sure to save the rubber ends. While you have your cutting wheel out cut the rear tank mount out (try and keep this in one piece to save yourself headaches later).
2) Measure the distance between the two “slots” on the underside of the front of the new tank. Subtract the width of the backbone from this number then divide this number in half. This will give you the length for the new mounts for the front (you might want to add a little onto the length for safe measure and then grind it down until the tank fits).
3) Weld your new front mounts to the backbone in approximately the same spot as the old ones. If you saved the old rubber ends put them on the new front mounts and slip the tank into place. This is when you will grind the ends of the mounts until the tank fits properly. When grinding the ends down make sure you grind the same amount from each side! I can’t stress how important this is, if you don’t the tank will not sit straight.
4) Now that your new tank is sitting in place mark where the rear tank mount needs to be and then weld it into place. If you use a Marauder tank like I did you will have to change the mounting bolts out for longer ones.
5) If you noticed on my pics you will see I fabricated a “collar” of sorts to fill the gap between the lip of the tank and the backbone. I used ¼” steel, this is a little heavier than what is needed but it’s what I had, and of course after I had everything welded in place and painted I found a place to get some diamond plate which is what I originally wanted.

Just as a warning to anyone thinking of doing this conversion:
You will have to cut down the stock seat so that it will fit between the new tank position and the pillion seat.
You will have to remove/replace the stock air box which in turn means you will have to make up new brackets to mount the side covers.

Nice job, I like the look and I like the idea of having more range for riding. I have this on my list of things to do, although I am not sure yet of which tank I will use. My first choice is a hand made aluminum 5 gallon Goldstar style tank...but they go for $400-500 so that may not happen any time soon.
