Post by freerider23 on 08/11/05 at 12:41:01

i started my bike the other day, and theoil filter went through the cover, along with half the oil.  the mechanic is tearin it apart for free out of sheer curiosity.  anyone have any ideas on why this happened????

i would guess inferior alloy quality when they cast the part.

what year machine?  if one is bad, so are others.

Tell the mechanic you want the filter back. What brand is it? It seems like this was caused by a build up of pressure.

Who changed the oil filter last? - it could just be my eyes - but that spring looks a lot heaver than the  silver stock spring and is the filter caved in a bit?

Could you have maybe unknowingly banged the cover on something and put a crack in it on one of your rides?

Hmm, Just finding this again as it has fallen back to page 2 behind a pile of other topics.

Are we still saying the oil pressure did this?
The fracture looks like it matched the O.D. of the filter.
Could have a previous owner attempted to install a wrong/too tall filter and attempted to squash the cover on?  It looks like a cookie cutter punched it out.
Find it hard to believe that the filter media didn't puncture. Damifino.
I guess replace the filter, spring, o-ring and cover. Then  see if it repeats. ??? I hate to say that when the cause is still unknown, but at least there would be confirmation of a real prob.
Most oiling systems have a bypass of some kind, perhaps somethings is stuck?

I find that just baffling at this point.

Did the mechanic ever say what he found/thought?

That spring looks a lot heavier than the one in my '02. Maybe when the cover was on the spring crushed down till the coils hit and caused the cover to crack. The cover is only thin cast aluminum afterall. Strange thing to have happen.

What bugs me is the hole is bigger than the spring.
It's like the whole filter was coming out.

I don't know, but I agree with Mr_650.  Look at the filter picture from the Tech Corner....

Something doesn't match here, and my guess is that some people shouldn't be allowed to turn a wrench  :P

the mechanic said he ran 4 quarts of oil through it and it ran fine--with his foot holdin the broken piece in place---he dont know whats wrong.

Looks like the cover is about $22 plus a spring, o-ring's, and filter - i'd replace um' fill it with oil - pull the  head breather hose - is it still puffin? - and give it one more chance - it is strange - maybe it was just weak from some thing - got stepped on or some such -
