Title: What Jacket Do You Wear?
Post by Weez on 07/25/05 at 11:25:48

hey all,

Just wondering what kind of jackets you all wear with your ls650.  I dont really know if I want leather or not.  I just want something that wil look like a normal jacket when i'm not on my bike.  Any suggestions?

Hey,

i've been looking and I like this one made by icon:

Anyone have experience with icon clothing?

Also, i'm looking into getting an icon mainframe helmet...any opinions?

I have a Joe Rocket Atomic Textile Jacket.  It has some basic armor and good venting for the warm days.   $69 for the previous year's model.

I also have an icon Alliance Rubatone Solid helmet (in flat black).  I picked it up on closeout on eBay for ~$100.  Very comfortable so far.  http://www.rideicon.com

nothing beats a good set of leathers.

i've got some british chaps, and an old leather jacket with no insignia's, patchs or pins.  i even leave the old bugs on them.   ;D

I also have one of those cheap $25 buffalo leather jackets from eBay.

I haven't tried it on the road yet, but the weather just seems too hot for it.  I'm sure it would be nice on the open road, but around here, the fastest I would go is 35mph.

I ride with three jackets and they are all motorcycle specific so impossible to blend in with the citizenry. I like that.

Hot weather --- Teknic with removable liner. It's a cordura kevlar mix with dense foam padding in elbows and lower spine. It is lightweight and rolls up nicely to fit into soft saddlebags.

Cool Weather --- Firstgear Leather-Tex. This is a tight fit worn with a crew neck long sleeve shirt. Predominatly gore tex and Kevlar with leather on the shoulders and elbows over armour. Lots of vents. Because of the multi composite materials it is expensive to dry clean.

Cold Weather --- Mirage black leather. A typical mc jacket bought one size large so I can layer or wear electric vest. Thick leather and very toasty.

So there you have it. A jacket for each occasion. I could never get by with just one. I actually have two others that have been replaced but I find it hard to part with them. You know old memories.

Mine's similar to Bentwheel's.  They really don't look "non-bike" to me.

Hot weather: Teknic Supervent Mesh (http://www.newenough.com/teknic_supervent_jacket_page.htm) (armor included).

Cool/Cold Weather: Brosh Power Cool with quilted zip-out liner (http://www.brosh.com/new/default.asp?pid=101&L=1) and additional back armor.

Year-round
Leather Legs black basic (half-chaps) (http://www.leatherlegs.net/llegpic2new.html)

Hot weather, First Gear mesh jacket with the soft armor, I've got the blue one. It doesn't look too bad but the armor gives you an armadillo look which draws stares from the cagers. For cold weather I've one of the buffalo jackets like TBec2000. It did a nice job protecting my skin when I high-sided last year. I hit hard enough to trash a helmet and crack three ribs, didn't loose any skin though. There are enough quality jackets out there that look good, just expect to spend some cash. Cheap gear is better than no gear, luck on you choice.

I go with leather most of the time.  I have a black leather driving jacket.  Weather here varies greatly during the day.

When I leave in the morning, it is often hovering around 55, then up to 80's during the day and back to the 50s at night.

I have a Joe Rocket Phoenix mesh jacket, but I rarely wear it.  It's great during the mid-day or for a short ride in the afternoon, but no good if I'm out after dark or if I start early in the morning.

And it makes me look like a linebacker. :-[

For cold to cool: http://www.leatherup.com/thumb_img/Motorcycle-B7100_1098311576.jpg (http://www.leatherup.com/dept.asp?dept_id=06):  From Leatherup.com (click photo to go there) it's $60 and made in Pakistan.  The stitching on the lining is loosening, the leather thongs on the zippers fell off, but for $60 you can't complain.
For cool to mild: a ratty old denim jacket.
Above mild:  t-shirt.

If I go down I might get scraped -- I'm willing to accept that in return for full time comfort.

I've got a Motoboss mesh jacket with padding and armor.  Wore it this weekend in 95+ degree heat, and as long as I was moving, I was really comfortable.  Of course, I was sweating like a fiend when stopped; but in that heat, you're sweating no matter what you're wearing. :P

For cooler weather I have an armored textile jacket I bought at a bike show back in January; I think I'll be replacing it this fall, though.  Probably some kind of leather.

Waterbuffalo leather police style winter jacket. Summer is patch and pin covered dry-rotted 10 year old leather vest over patch flying battery acid eaten Levi jacket I've had for about 14 years.

USA made CHP-spec half-helmet year round, with flip down riot faceplate for rainy or cold weather riding. Helmet covered with non-PC stickers, of course. My favorite? WARNING! The content of this helmet is under extreme pressure!

My gear consists of a yellow/black Joe Rocket Meteor textile with armour, vents & liner that I picked up on e-bay for $50 ... doesn't match my teal-green Savage, but what-the-hey ... the jacket is more visible than standard black ... also have a cheap thrift shop vintage (70's era) black leather m/c jacket ... wear mainly at weekly Bike Nite. Just bought a nice pair of m/c gloves with vented & padded knuckles & velcro wrist closure. Boots are a pair of black 12-year old lace up army cadet boots (real comfortable!). Eye protection is a pair of yellow tint safety glasses; fit well over my Rx eyeglasses. Helmets; 1 black 3/4 HCC & 1 white jet-style e-bay cheapie (used mostly when commuting because of visibility) ... both open face. Always wear jeans ... no chaps or leather pants yet; maybe next year.

First gear Ranger III leather. Has a snap out vest which is great for riding in the mountains in unpredictable weather. Even has crash padding on elbows and spine.

Wilson makes a good leather, had a brown bomber  type for almost 15 years, the liner and pockets finally ripped out of it. Like the looks of that one also.

I've been seriuosly looking at the Alpinestar Air-Flo textile jacket. It's plain black, nothing fancy or crotch rocket looking, it has protection in th shoulders, elbows and back and has been recommended by a fellow co-worker. Sells for around $150

I heartily recommend the Teknic Supervent for warm to hot weather.  I wore mine on a couple of 90-degree days and it was just fine.  Good padding and good airflow while moving.  It's got nice deep pockets too.

I wear a Joe Rocket Phoenix mesh jacket. Real comfortable in the summer. Keeps the sun off but the wind blows through it like cheesecloth. Not bad in cooler weather with the liner in but I really want a brown leather bomber jacket with armor for those cooler days.

Summer here in TEXAS it's hotter than H-ll. I am guilty of riding with just a lightweight denim overshirt. Have just discovered & am making Kool Vests. they are filled with the stuff the neck coolers use & really keep you cool. I worked in one 3 days last week remodeling rent property. Made the difference in being able to keep going or not. I am planning to try it out on the bike this weekend. Will let you know how that goes. Winter & Fall I have a heavy leather jacket w/zip out lining. It's bulky but warm. I have Chaps but since I am so short, couldn't make myself cut them off after they cost so much so haven't worn them yet. Think they are going to find a new home.  By the way, I still have my Original Harley Leather jacket I wore in 1956. I was the coolest girl in school.

I'm wearing a Joe Rocket Meteor 4, minus the liner.  The venting is pretty good as long as you're moving.  Since it's all black, it doesn't look too flashy when you're not on the bike.  A mesh jacket would probably be cooler.

I use a Joe Rocket Suzuki Racing Team jacket.  It's really comfortable for a superbike jacket that is.  It's textile, so I hope I don't freeze on the cold days to come.

The protection it gives you is amaizing (not that I had ever needed it) It has pads on shoulders, elbows, lower back, and back.  I like that it has bright colors and emblems all over the place so you are noticable to cagers around you day or night.

Ride Safe!

That's a great looking jacket, wonder how it would do in 100+ degrees in Texas?

Too hot right now in Texas for any jacket, I think.  But I still see bikers all bundled up - not me.

In the winter time, I have a leather jacket with a perfect gun pocket in the front.

Some guy in Alaska had a heavy black& blue *motorcycle*, leather "1st-(something)" jacket w/ thinsulate liner on eBay. It is a little large but it works all year. Snagged it for $75, not 300 washed the liner per instructions and good to go.
Fonz got nutin on me ...Aeee! ;D  8)

I got some patchs for joining CMT/ABATE and was wondering if sneaker repair adhesive like "Shoe Goo" would be a good way to attach then to my jacket?? Any experience w/ that?

Mr 650 - You reckon that fella's got some more of those jackets to sell?  Can you post his eBay user id?

Thanks, David

It's usually worthwhile to check out http://www.newenough.com also.  Their stuff is new; it's just the previous model or overstock, etc.

this time of year, I'll wear a leather vest in the mornings/evenings.

just bought a Jafrum typical MC style leather jacket off of eBay for $74 inc shipping.  seems to be pretty heavy duty and has a zip out thinsulate lining.  will be interesting to see how it holds up, but I won't get a chance to use 'til later this fall (currently 95 degrees here).

here's the link to the store http://stores.ebay.com/Jafrum-com

In the summer, a t-shirt is about all I want.  However I don't have to worry about a surprise rain making me a wet t-shirt contestant either.

Ladies may or may not like that option...

I agree. I wear a thick leather biker type jacket I purchased used off Ebay most of the time. For warmer weather I have a lighter bomber style leather jacket (also from Ebay). Leather will protect you in a slide. For pants I use kevlar lined blue jeans. They work fine in all temps. I bought relaxed fit from http://www.dragginjeans.com
