Thanks Paula.  I appreciate it.  I tried recovering mine and scooping some foam out and adding gel to make my own but I think I fairly well butchered the job.  It's usable but not comfortable and I need a new seat.  So now I know upholstery is definitely NOT my forte.

If you win, you gotta let the rest of us have a crack at the seat pan you're leaving off.  You never know - one of us might need it.

Can you post a link to the Oneida seat?  I'm pretty happy with mine right now, but I'm always on the lookout for stuff like this.

Thanks.

Wow i ordered my gel seat from oenida like a month ago and its not on there anymore. it was especially for the savage and required NO modification.  Im not too impressed with the gel seat- not much different from the stock seat in my opinion. if anyone gets one of the one-peice s-40 gel seats, let me know how that one feels... thanks

I have that gel seat.  Won it on the previous auction.  Looks like Savage_Rob may get it for a lot less than what I paid.

I rode with the gel seat for a few days.  What I found was that the gel definitely made a difference, at least for me.  I wasn't feeling any shock to the tailbone and up my back from the bumps in the road.  I felt I could last a lot longer before I HAD to get off.

The down side for me is that the gel seat seems to sit lower than the stock seat.  I could tell because I found I was looking through my windshield instead of over it when I was riding.  The difference was maybe one inch, but it was a big deal for me. I'm 5' 7" and the stock seat was a touch low for me to begin with.

I do like the seat, so I think I'm going to try to find someone who can add some foam to it and re-use the gel insert.  The thicker seat might look kind of funny on the bike, but as long as I'm comfortable it don't matter.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Savage_Rob on 07/22/05 at 16:24:32

Not gonna bid any higher.  Someone else is gettin' it.  I would have preferred the 2-piece version but it's discontinued and no longer available through dealers.  I may go ahead and get the S40 version and do whatever slight mod is necessary to make it fit.  Has anyone actually seen the two versions of the S40 gel seat and can reasonably describe the difference between the pillow and classic versions?

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by mikedasavage on 07/22/05 at 17:12:34

Do these people really not have any sense? $202 you can get it for that at the dealer. I'm amazed

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Savage_Rob on 07/22/05 at 17:22:27

Actually, you can't.  Only the 1-piece S40 seats are available.  The gel seat for the LS650 is discontinued.  It's not worth $200 to me for the 2-piece though.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by mikedasavage on 07/22/05 at 19:24:23

my stealership still has some. trust me there are still some out there. they didn't just throw away the ones they made.

Post by Mr 650 on 07/24/05 at 17:16:02

I would like a comparo between the old 2-piece gel seat and the new 1-piece S40 gel seat(non-pillow). The new 1-piece appears thicker in the few photos I have examined. Has anyone seen these side-by-side?
I would like to traded up to the new one and be happy to sell/swap my 2-piece gel to Rob or whomever might use it here. I am 2 months behind here and still want to try Gregs "middle bumper removal" trick when I get back. :)

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Savage_Rob on 07/25/05 at 06:00:04

I finally said to hell with it and ordered an S40 seat.  I got the pillow type.  I'll let you know what I think once I get it and have an opportunity to take a longer ride on it.  I called all the dealers in my area and none stock any of the seats nor do they have any bikes with any on them.  In general, you just don't have any way to make a comparison.  So I flipped a coin.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Ed_L. on 07/25/05 at 06:52:20

The S40 gel seat that I ordered came in Friday, installation on my '02 was a snap. Instead of drilling a hole in the rear fender to mount the back tab on the gell seat I bent the metal loop on the fender back and slipped the tab under it. Haven't done a long ride yet but after a 50 mile test ride it feels fine. There is more of a cup in the gel seat saddle area so it is harder to slide your butt back for more leg room, besides that it seems much more comfortable.  Ride Safe

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Karen627 on 07/25/05 at 10:32:41

Ed, which seat did you get, the pillow or the classic?

I've got the 2005 S40; the stock seat is killing my tailbone. :P  Does the Savage stock seat hurt the same way?  Or is it a different kind of uncomfortable?

I hear the Savage seat is worse than the stock S40 seat.  I'm wondering if I'd get the same improvement by replacing my S40 seat that you seem to be getting from replacing your Savage seat?

Thanks. :)

Did you get the Classic or Pillow version?  I'm guessing Classic because the Pillow appeared to have less of a cup/depression than the stock (at least in the poor quality pictures on the dealer sites) although those appeareances may have nothing to do with actual sitting.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Ed_L. on 07/25/05 at 12:16:10

It was the classic version, could hardly tell the difference between the two cause of the poor picture in the dealer's catalog. I think the pillow version has buttons, classic comes without. It's an improvement over the stock '02 seat but doesn't give any more leg room. Too hot to do anything but ride, the shop gets over 100 by noon. Maybe by the fall I'll work on some forward controls but not now, Florida in the summer is rough.

Flordia in the winter is georgeous.  As a kid in Detroit we spent one Christmas vacation in the Keys and another in St. Pete.   I liked the Gulf coast much better, much softer sand.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by mikedasavage on 07/25/05 at 17:50:50

well the gulf coast is only nice on the florida side. with nice white sand looks like snow from the distance.

On the texas side its much uglier. I think the nicest place is where i'm from orginally south padre island. but that is ugly compared to the florida side.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Savage_Rob on 07/26/05 at 05:55:07

The Yucatan side is sweet too.  The Texas coast has its good and bad spots.  In general, the closer you get to Houston/Galveston, the less I like it.  You know, brown water is just not my thing.

Will do.  Once it arrives and I get it mounted, I'll take some better pics and get 'em posted.  Once I get a slightly longer ride (say 200 miles) on it, I'll post my evaluation.  If Ed can do the same, maybe the rest of the members can be better informed.  Maybe we can post a thread with closer pics of both S40 gel seats in the Marketplace as a shopper's advisory or something.  We could even add some of the LS650 gel seat for anyone that can find one and is considering buying it.

I bought the s40 gel seat for my 2002 savage.  I requires drilling a hole behind where the stock back seat goes.  It is attached by  the normal bolts in front and a metal extension on the back of the new one piece seat.   It requires some rerouting of wires.  The seat is not that much better than stock.  But, I do notice some improvement

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Savage_Rob on 07/26/05 at 16:59:18

Ed said he didn't need to drill the fender; he bent the original metal loop used for the tabs on the LS650 pillion and inserted the S40 tab.  I'll look into the same thing before drilling.  By the way, thanks for that idea Ed.

Looks like it has more padding than the classic model I got. Haven't had a chance to get any long rides in yet but the new gel seat is an improvement over the stock seat. I've only gotten a couple of 50 mile rides in so far with the new seat but it feels better. Ride Safe

Ed, that idea is just peachy.  I just tapped that metal loop/bracket a couple of times with a mallet so that it laid back a bit further and flatter and it was easy to install without any need to drill at all.  Insert the front tab as usual, bend the seat very slightly to let the rear metal tab slide into the loop/bracket and then bolt as usual.  I've never been a fan of buttons in upholstery but I think this seat looks pretty good.  The pillow seat does sit a bit higher than the original and I'll just have to see how that goes.  The one-piece design feels more comfortable than the original two-piece to slide back against slightly.  It's raining now but I'll let y'all know how it goes once I get in a 200 mile ride.  For me, monkeybutt usually set in at about 175 miles or so.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Savage_Rob on 08/07/05 at 13:22:14

Okay, initial report...  I haven't done a long ride yet but I just did 90 miles on her today and I am pleased with the seat.  It sits higher than the stock and I initially though that would bother me but I actually like the position of my legs a bit better.  While it's not really as "cushy" as a pillow seat with buttons may look to be, it does isolate just about all of the vibration.  I never felt any discomfort at all but I still think I need a 200 mile ride to say for sure.  I'll keep you posted.  I think it looks pretty good on the bike.

Oooh, wow, that does look good.

Hmm.  I might have to get me one of those.  It just might keep my tailbone from getting hammered into a pile of dust.

I'm going to hold off a little while longer, though, in case anyone posts any more detailed reviews -- but I think I'll be ordering the pillow seat pretty soon.  Kind of surprising, since I had originally figured the classic would offer more padding -- I thought the looks of the buttons would mean sacrificing some comfort.

Thanks!  :)

Does the gel seat make you sit any lower?somebody on this site said it did and somebody said it did'nt. My 05 is killing my bask and tailbone, but I'm also looking to sit a little lower in the saddle.

That really DOES look great, Rob!  When do you think you'll "exercise" it fully?  I'd be interested to hear how it compares to that gel pad you'd used before (mine just came in yesterday).  If you find it's comperable I may just buy the seat too.  I've got a long ride coming up in September, so I want to be prepared  :)

So far as overall comfort goes, that Gel-Tec pad you just got is definitely superior.  But since my main problem is not remembering to put the pad on for long rides, this seat should be a help.  How much of a help is yet to be seen.  I'll keep you posted.

The pillowtop gel I received from Oneida Suzuki sits me nearly 2 inches lower than the S40 stock seat!  I thought it would be the same or slightly higher.  I am 5'5" and my knees feel like they are in my ribs now.  :)
It still rides good, definetly less vibration but not as much cushion. I, too am waiting for time to run a 200 plus mile trip out to see for sure. ;)

Hmmm, well you made me do some research, it appears the Savage and S40 both have 27.6" seat height stock.

I thought your seat Pic looked like it was thicker than mine.  Oh geesh, here I go me and my troubles--LOL ;D

Okay, sooo I measured.  The stock S40 I have is 1" to 1.25" thicker than the gel pillowtop I have(Depending on where you measure).
Also, the stock seat is approximately 13" from tank to tailbone :)
The gel is just barely 11" and is "cup" shaped, which pushes me forward.
The width of the gel is nearly 2" narrower, also

The stock seat rider and passenger is nearly the same height.  The gel seat  sits the passenger up higher (which I like better).

Wonder if the seats can vary slightly like stone washed blue jeans?  :P LOL

It could also be that my stock seat was a 98 and had years of use to "settle" it a bit.

Now that makes since, I am sure my foam stock seat will do some "settlin' " after a few years, only a few thousand on her now ;)

Just got back from a night ride, nice and slow on the country roads. Stars, crickets, racoons, the quiet and not a soul around-- very beautiful. :)

I think the old seat just plain sits differently too; especially being two pieces instead of one.  I don't know.  It could also be how firm the pad actually is.  Maybe I just sank down into the old seat more.  All of my observations are purely subjective.  I am sure I like this seat though.

I just ordered my Gel seat from Oneida this week. I own a 2005 S40. I am looking forward to trying it out.

I would guess that someone at Oneida is thinking something is going on with the sudden rush on S40/Savage Accessories.

Paula - Lucky you.  Around MD, night rides in the country mean lots of bugs on the face!

Nah, just the 90 mile ride last weekend and some shorter commutes this week.  I'm hoping for one this weekend but I need to check with the Keeper of the Calendar (a.k.a. my wife) as to what other stuff may be planned.

Rob,
Did you have to do the "seat mod" with the new pillowtop seat? (The one where people were adding the spacers in the front to lift it up an inch or so). I have the 2 peice gel seat from oeneida, and im not super thrilled. wondering if this pillow seat will be better? how wide is it?

yes, bugs are usually an issue here, too. But we have very dry conditions this year and very few bugs because of it.  Bad for our yards and crops :(, good for those night rides!!!  :D

I already had the spacers in front from my stock seat and I just left 'em there.  At its widest point, it's 11.25 inches.

Allright I got my new GEL SEAT i ordered the classic cus of the custom sissy bar i put on it AND IT LOOKS GREAT man looks a million times better than that old fashioned Suzuki Seat.  Here is what i did:

1. hit the exisiting bar on the fender that held in the back seat with a hammer so that it layed back at an angle.

2. Did the seat mod

3. slid the seat in the front then bent the seat a little to get it to slide in the rear tab.

4. I wasn't going to drill through my fender but the tab was scratching up the rear fender pretty bad so i drilled it in and it covered up the scratches and everything was great.

Feedback So Far:

1. I haven't ridden but a few miles but the seat feels stiffer i guess cus its newer but it does feel more comfy. i"m gonna ride about 60 miles today so i'll post my feedback.

2. LOOKS ABSOLUTLEY GREAT

3. i feel like i need to make the seat mod higher because the front has some play it seems to go down and i feel like sliding more into the tank .

i'll give more feedback later. gotta get back to work.

I checked and mine doesn't rub the fender at all.  I think I may have bent it up slightly before installing it though.

My new gel seat arrived and I installed it yesterday. I am probably going to ship it back for a refund. It seams to push me even further forward than the old seat. The step-up is almost like a verticle wall.I feel like i am being crammed up against the tank and I have little room for my legs to shift and brake.

Is this a common problem with this seat?

Mine doesn't seem to have that problem.

HI! I just got my pillowtop gel seat from Oneida yesterday as well. It is a dream! World of difference from the two piece gel seat i got a month ago! Im selling that on ebay right now and it looks as if, as of now, im at least breaking even on the seats...$165 bids and theres still 6 days left! woo hoo! anyway, the reason im writing, is i cant quite figure out how to put this S40 seat on my 98. i read about pounding down the tab on the fender, it just doesnt look to me like that will work. the metal on the seat seems to extend several inches beyond that tab, even if it was bent down...id hate to bend that down and it not work. seems like youd have to bend the seat somehow to get it into both the front and back tabs. just doesnt seem like it will fit... advise?

That is correct.  If you bend the metal loop back a bit, you'll be able to first insert the front of the seat as normal and then flex the seat slightly to slip the tab into the loop at the back.  Then bolt on as normal.  Mikedasavage reported his tab rubbed the fender, so he drilled and bolted it.  Mine doesn't rub at all but I may have bent the tab upward slightly before installation.  I don't recall.  If you do decide to drill, be careful of the wiring underneath the fender.  Ed_L came up with the idea of bending the loop back and I love it.  I wonder if his tab rubs the fender... Ed?

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by mikedasavage on 08/19/05 at 08:35:02

it wasn't hard to bolt it down into the fender at all plus i feel the seat is more secure. but you have to hammer the existing rear loop that looks like |-----| well not just like that but its towards the back of the fender then you slip the seat in the front then kinda bend the seat a little and it will slip right in. it takes a slight bit of force and maybee a little angle but once its in its great. I also go the classic versus the pillow and i too feel like i'm falling into the tank. I did the seat mod but i think i'm going to increase the hieght on my seat mod to see if that improves. but the seat itself looks awesome on the bike and is a million times more comfy even if my jewels are inside the tank  ;D

The tab on the back of my gel seat doesn't hit the fender, there seems to be almost an 1/4 inch space between the tab and fender. I'm wondering if a major raising of the front of the seat would cause the rear tab to hit the rear fender. Currently I've got the front raised by an inch, any more height in the front would cause the rear of the seat to drop and possibly have the tab hit. I'm also playing around with putting spacers under the seat brackets that the bolts go into, hoping to raise the center of the seat by about an inch.  Once I get a handle on something that works I'll post it. Ed L.

My seat mod in the front is over an inch... maybe and inch and a half at most.  The tab on mine is raised up as yours is.  With the rubber supports underneath, I don't think raising the front further would lever it - only flex the seat.  I must admit though that I haven't had any passengers.  They might cause it to rub.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by mikedasavage on 08/19/05 at 14:30:04

that must be it because idont think i raised  the seat that much.

Ok here are the results. THE SEAT ROCKS. Made the bike look like a new bike. I went on a 100 mile ride and my butt felt alot better now the ride was still long and when i got down my feet hands and face were tingling from the numbness but i think alot of the vibration comes from the fact that we were flying. anyway its super awesome well worth the money. I love it.

WELL WORTH THE 180 FROM ONIEDA (180 WITH SHIPPING)

Four words:
CUSHY ON MY TUSHY!

This seat is a dream!! My boyfriend and I (well mainly him) did the seat mod last night (raised about an inch and a quarter) and then put my new pillowtop S40 seat on. he bent the fender tab down and then inserted the front tab, bent the metal tab on the bottom of the seat and slipped it under the fender tab. seems to work great. i rode into work today like always and i thought i was riding a new bike. i really sink down into the pillowtop and its sooo cushy. feels like a couch. i bought this pillowtop to replace the previous two-piece gel seat, which i can say doesnt even come close to this one. honestly felt no noticable difference from the stock seat with that gel! I only had it a month though, so maybe over time it would break in and get more comfortable. i am unfortunately not that patient and my new seat is the best thing that ive done to this bike (well maybe a close second to the muffler/rejet).  I have to agree with mikedasavage- this seat is WELL worth the money!

The only trouble with it, is maybe cuz im weak, but i cant get the seat tab under the fender tab. my boyfriend can, but try as i might i couldnt get that darn thing to slip under. im thinking of shaving off a quarter to a half inch of that metal tab so it doesnt have to be bent so much, and that way i can do it on my own. any other suggestions?

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by mikedasavage on 08/23/05 at 06:23:54

try doing it at an angle. unscrew the seat then while facing the rear of the bike grab the back of the seat and move it over to the right then bend the seat a little to get it out. I do agree its not easy but at an angle you have more room.

Title: Re: Gel Seat
Post by Savage_Rob on 08/23/05 at 06:29:53

Filing a bit off is not a bad idea either.  Just make sure you leave enough for it to be bolted properly should you decide to go that route or maybe sell the seat later.

Not yet.  Most of what I do is my daily commute, which is between 40 and 48 miles, depending upon traffic and errands.  The pure pleasure rides I've taken lately have tended to be in the 75-120 mile round-trip range.  So far, I am quite satisfied with my seat though I will be putting the sheepskin back on it, I think.  It really reduces sweating on hot days.  For that matter, it makes the seat more comfortable on cold days too.  It just doesn't look as good, that's all.

Put on the Pillowtop Gelseat from Oneida yesterday.  The mod was a snap (or a mallet ;)) and boy it makes quite a difference.  My back and hands started aching after 120miles, but the fact is they probably hurt after such a distance before but my butt hurt soo much more then that I didn't notice!  Great seat, easy mod.

That's my bit...

Well.. I decided to contiue using the gel seat to see if my first impression was short sighted. It seems that I am able to get used to the more forward push of the seat and I do have to agree, the numb-butt has not yet occured. I have not yet had the chance to go on a ride longer than 50 or so miles but I can easily feel the differance.

I am thinking of trying the seat mod to see if that helps with the problem of sitting so close to the tank. Has anyone done this with the gel seat on an S40 yet?

Not gonna bid any higher.  Someone else is gettin' it.  I would have preferred the 2-piece version but it's discontinued and no longer available through dealers.  I may go ahead and get the S40 version and do whatever slight mod is necessary to make it fit.  Has anyone actually seen the two versions of the S40 gel seat and can reasonably describe the difference between the pillow and classic versions?

If you like the two piece seat, you might take a look at GEL TEC  (www.geltecproducts.com), they have the "Cruiser Motorcycle Cushion" that is the best gel I have seen (they make a lot of medical gel products).  The price is $89.95 and is 12" x 15" x 2" ....2" of pure gel comfort.  All that would be needed is a thin layer of memory foam.
As a matter of fact I think I will order one.  I got some gel from them before and had planned on making a one piece seat but I think I will exchange it for the Cruiser Cushion and just do the single seat.

Yes, I had the mod in place with the stock seat and I just left it in place when I put the new gel seat on.  It helps with any of the seats that use the stock mount in front.

It's a great pad.  I have the leather version.  My only problem was never remembering to put it on for longer rides.  I still use it on school bleachers when my daughter's dance team competes.  If you are planning to cannibalize it to rework an existing seat, they do sell just the gel too.  It may be cheaper or you may get more for the same price.  On their Cruzer pad, the gel is actually glued/bonded to some foam already to make the pad cushier.

Hey Rob.....I checked out the seat on their website.....Not sure how it attaches OR do you simply just lay it down on top of the existing seat???? Does it slide around? How does that work?

It's not a seat; it's a seatpad.  It has velcro sewn onto the underside and comes with a strap you belt onto your existing seat.  It seemed to stay put pretty well, but I also had my sheepskin over it most of the time when I remembered to use it.  It's shaped more like a police saddle but works fine on the stock seat.  It's very comfortable... as long as you remember to take it with you.
