Title: advice on carb jet
Post by Jim_R on 07/14/05 at 19:26:40

Lancer gave me a 160 main and a 55 pilot.

i plan on installing a pod and i was wondering if a 160 was still too much (from earlier posts)

I got a 95 which im pretty sure is a weak 145 main and a 52.5 pilot.

I also heard ur advice that filing down the spacer to half its thickness was a better idea than to remove it and it seems to make sense to me.  Did the 80 models even have a spacer tho?

Im thinking a 157.5 would be a good idea but does the pilot need to replaced with 55 also?  I think greg had this setup at one time but i never saw his results.

Does anyone have a spare 157.5 I can paypal to get?

The bike won't know the difference between the 160 and the 157.5.  Throw in the 160 and be happy.  You may not end up needing to file down the spacer with the 160 main.

With EVERY Suzuki Savage you get a white spacer.

With the 160 main installed, get your savage to WOT then back off slightly. If it picks up speed your main jet is too rich.

Consider this....I have a pretty open pipe with a pod and I am running a thinner spacer and a 155 main.  I tried the 157.5, but I noticed a "flat spot" in the throttle response in mid range.  The rest is your choice  ::)

Also...at $4 per jet it is easier to just go to the dealer and buy one.

i was pretty sure that the 160 is too much but i wasnt sure about the 157.5.  I plan on placing the pod outside the airbox which might make it get more air rather than bobos setup in the airbox.  Im thinking of making a quick change setup  so if it rains I can unlatch a clamp, remove 90' elbow, and carry with me a smaller pod to put in the airbox just in case.

i have read so many posts about 160 being too much and some complained the 155 wasnt quite enoughwith a pod (maybe they had straight pipes?).

im running a stock sporter pipe with baffle.  maybe i should stick with the 155.  But if i kept the white spacer in it should i go with a 157.5 ?

Im getting it jetted by the dealership and I didnt want to tell him to replace the spacer with something not factory.  Because if he did it would be just enough of an excuse for him not to stand behind his work if something happens ya know?  He is rebuilding the engine, cept for the piston. lotta money ouch.  but i love my savage, i just want it faster heh.

ps thanks for all ur advice as always

Well, "more" does have its limits.  More airflow means more fuel to keep the correct ratio, but there is a point where you can't get anymore air (physical limits) and increasing the fuel just makes it too rich.  I would say that if you have a baffled muffler on the bike that a 152.5 or 155 is the most you need.  Also remember that the spacer/needle and the main jet function at different (and overlapping) throttle positions.  You should change the spacer, but since there is no OEM part for that, I doubt the dealer will do it.

I agree.  I personally wound up bouncing back and forth between the 155 and 157.5 to look for minor differences.  I wound up with a 55 pilot jet and a 155 main jet.  On my bike, there was no noticeable functional difference between the 155 and 157.5 except that I got a bit better mileage with the 155.  160 was definitely too rich for my setup.

K&N direct swap air filter
DJ needle w/ equivalent to 1/2 white spacer
MAC muffler
55 pilot jet
155 main jet
