Title: Starter issues
Post by Rogers35 on 05/03/05 at 15:53:19

Hey all, just got an `86 savage for a good price, the starter is close to shot. Pulled it out, the brushes need replacing and I took it to a local electrical shop, and they told me the armature is shot also and its not worth rebuilding. Iam tempted to just put new brushes in, clean up the rotor and the contacts and call it good. Any thoughts? Is the shop just trying to get some cash out of me? I had always thought that a starter was so simple that about the only thing that could wear/break was the brushes. Am I wrong?

K.I.S.S.

Double Trouble is rare.   A motor will go through several sets of brushes before the armature is worn down.   If the brushes are worn then most likely that is the only trouble, not counting the carbon dust buildup on the armature.  Get the wife's toothbrush and give the armature a good cleaning, maybe a light swipe with very fine sandpaper to remove any glaze; replace the brushes, should work fine.  Clean the toothbrush before putting it back in the medicine cabinet.

This post should be moved to the Rubber Side Down.  The Technical Corner, as stated at the top of the page and in the Read Me post at the top of all the posts, is for technical documents only.  Questions go to Rubber Side Down.

Good point.  It does seem that that concept has been lost in this section.  If people would keep their general questions in the Rudder Side Down section, they would be easier to follow and reduce a bunch of duplication.

This section has grown to be just another chat area.  Why is it that people don't understand this?  Maybe Susan can clean it up when she has time.

The line between the two sections seems to get a little blurred at times.

Personally, I think the line is pretty clear... sometimes vision is blurred or even nonexistent.  I think a lot of people simply don't read the statements that state specifically what this forum is for.  They see "technical" and start typing - without ever taking the time to read.  That's the primary reason for so many repeat questions on the exact same topics - no effort to search for and read the existing information.  It's unfortunate but a lot of people would rather not spend the extra 20 minutes and hope it'll be served up to them.  I certainly won't claim to have never asked a previously answered question but I have actually looked for the answers first by searching the forum's previous posts.  I even made sure to download the archived posts from Berts site and read them before posting redundant questions.  I figure it's at least worth the effort on my part.

Okay, that's my rant for the night... or at least some opinionated observations.

I agree and have considered (and am guilty of) this too.
Once before the 'big crash', I even clicked on my Members/posts and deleted my impertinent, conversational-only posts.
I just found out that icestormcity.com will no longer host the few photos I put up here too. I supose I should cull through my  Tech Corner posts again.
.... so why am I typing THIS!!??  ??? ??? ???
