I know a few of you are using/experimenting with exhaust wrap (Savage_Rob?) and was wondering what brand your using, where you purchased it from, what size roll you purchased (looks like it comes in 15’, 50’ and 100’ rolls) and how it's holding up. I wanted to get a roll of 2” black tape to wrap my header to check out the looks.

I'm using DEI wrap and sealant and it appears to be holding up fairly well but I think it may actually work too well. The extra heat blued the hell out of my MAC in just a week or two. I decided I'd go ahead and blacken the muffler, so I used the DEI black silicone sealant I used on the wrap (it says it's also for painting blocks/manifolds/headers) and it looked pretty good initially but then the extreme heat began flaking the paint off the muffler near the header. Maybe I didn't rough the chrome enough before painting - I thought I had anyway. Anyway, I'm going to wind up removing the wrap and having both the header and the muffler powder-coated. Until then, I'll probably use some BBQ Black. It seems to have held up on my 55 gallon drum BBQ grill for quite a few years.

I had thought about using hi temp BBQ paint – especially since the rest of my bike is going to be flat black – it would match pretty well. The only issue I had with it was how to strip the chrome off the header – sandblasting would obviously work, but I don’t have my sandblasting setup up and running yet, and I thought it might be a little overkill. Sanding would be incredibly time consuming, but it might be the way to go. If we get another string of rainy days around here, maybe I will go this route. I hadn’t thought about the blueing issue with the exhaust wrap – that might tempt me to not go that route. I don’t mind the header turning blue, but I would be none too happy if my jardine starting blueing.

I'm just gonna powder-coat both flat black but, until then, paint 'em.

have you gotten any prices yet on powdercoating? Would you strip the chrome yourself or have them do it? Or do they just go right over the chrome?

No prices yet but I'd bet they'll sandblast it before dusting it.
