Title: two up power
Post by mykeed on 06/20/05 at 04:25:35

I was dissapointed in my Savage (probably for the first time) yesterday. I'd been waiting for along time to take my sister for a ride. Finally go the chance as she was up visiting yesterday. I must say I was dissapointed and nearly embarresed by the lack of power my stock 04 had with her on the back. Now before I go further, let me say she is very petite, weighs no more than 110lb.
Until this I have only had my son (60+/- lb) back there and had no problems.
I would never feel comfortable going into moving traffic based on the perf I saw yesterday.
So the question is, would the mods mentioned here; muffler, jet, spacer etc help all that much or am I doomed to ride alone? BTW I weight about 175lbs.
Still had a great weekend here in the mid-east, weather fine for riding.
Thanks
-Mike

It adds considerable more power - more upper rpm range than lower -  enough for comfort with 2 up - I doubt it - it would be better - but in the end the savage is a great one up bike ~200 lbs and a bit small for a 2 up ~ 400 lbs

I have an '02 with a Jardine and jet kit installed. 148 main jet I believe. I weigh 185 and my (now ex) girlfriend weighed about 115. We did a good 45 min ride and I noticed abosolutely no loss in power. I don't know about the rest of you, but my savage seems to haul a$$. I have no other mods to the bike but the muffler and jet change.

The first weekend I had the bike, my wife and I rode it two up to Baton Rouge from Long Beach MS, about an hour and a half each way. The bike was, umm, loaded down. No problems. Other than that horrible pillion pad.  >:(  With some very minor tweaking, mainly the idle air screw at that point, it ran and pulled flawlessly.

You might have gotten one of the "Made on Friday night, gutless wonder specials" as opposed to my "made on Monday morning hangover special" ... ::)

All kidding aside, some Savages seem to be considerably different from the rest of the production run. I'd start modifying the intake and exhaust systems. Pull the airbox door, turn the mixture screw out a bit, and put on a more freeflowing muffler if you haven't already. Carrying a passenger? Try running 38-40 or 42 PSI in the tires, it will help the bike roll with a bit less resistance courtesy of the smaller contact patch with the road. It will respond to throttle, brake, and lean inputs more readily as well.

If those don't help, and you like riding two up, you might need to investigate a different ride. The V-stars, Shadows, and Intruders (oops, Boulevards  :-/  :-X  :'( ) all seem to have power to spare when modded out like all of us do our Savages/S40s.

Don't do this!
Running beyond tire manufacturers maximum pressure recommendations is dangerous. You risk a blowout. Stick with the rear pressure of 32psi riding solo. As for riding with a reduced contact patch, the opposite is true. The greater the contact patch( at 32psi) the more rubber you put to the ground giving you more response to acceleration; braking, and leaning as well as suspension interaction. WD I will give you "the bike will roll with less resistance" but that's not worth anything.

:o   Increased air pressure=better burnouts  :o

Yeah, good one dannimal. I can't argue with that.

That sounds like fun.  On what day and at what hour will we all start the tires smokin????

I have been riding 2 up with my wife lately on my bone stock '87 savage. I think the power is fine with the added weight. The motor pull us to a 70mph cruising speed without a fuss. We weigh a combined 330-340lbs. I can tell that the bike is slower, but not by much. Braking power is greatly reduced though.

I ride two up on my stock 2005 S40.  With my 9 y/o son (114 lbs) or my wife (115 lbs.) I don't really notice any difference.  I'm about 165 Lbs.. And had a top end of around 80 mph two up.. But I can easily get 85- 90 solo...

I've always run my tires at the maximum sidewall pressure, regardless of what the vehicle recommends. Works for me. The roads here are crappy, and FULL tires don't catch the rain grooves as readily.  The bike recommended pressure does give a much more comfortable ride though.

I run max pressure as well.  I prefer the handling feeling better that way.  With lower pressure I feel like I am wallowing around the road...same with my cars.
Besides, you can go a little faster and response to turns seems to be quicker...at least for me.

With the Texas heat, I like mine far enough below max that they wouldn't exceed max at 100 miles on a hot day.
