Title: Need an opinion Post by Dave_Bennett on 06/18/05 at 05:43:21 I have just sold my savage to a co-worker that was looking for a starter bike, and I am trying to decide on what to get for my next ride. I am thinking of geting a Ural Wolf (www.ural.com) and I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with Urals either as an owner or from a repair shop point of view. I am trying to see what the repair/maintenance will be on the bike. I really like the look of the Urals, and I might even consider getting one of their sidecar models if the missus says she will ride with me (sadly something she would not do on my savage. This site and Bert's site have been a great asset for me while owning my savage and I have passed them on to the new owner of my bike. Keep them both going folks. Dave Bennett |

Title: Re: Need an opinion Post by Greg_650 on 06/18/05 at 07:17:13 Dave, Ya know...this is a Savage forum. Who is gonna think about another bike in here? And you sold your Savage before getting a new bike? Shame on you.... Just kidding. I gotta say, I like your choice. I've seen these before but they were much older models. It's a "BMWish" looking engine in a cruiser bike frame...1) I think the boxer style engine is great, and 2) I like the idea of different....and this definitely qualifies :o I hope the fit and finish of the bike is good...I'd heard that older models could be a bit shabby by modern motorcycle standards of quality, but on the other hand, these bikes have been around for a very long time. They may have really improved over the years too....like the Enfield Bullet. Get one. It may put you in the Savage Hall of Shame, but you'll still be quite Savage. Post pics, too. |

Heathrow airport, June, 1958, my uncle, Jack Matanle, picks me up in his hack. My first view of England was from the seat of a sidecar. Fond memory. One thing to consider with the Ural Wolf vs. hack -- look at the forks. They are different because the steering geometry requirements are different. Because you do not ride a hack -- you drive it. It is not suppose to lean. The Ural hacks have a reverse gear -- you can drive backward! |

Title: Re: Need an opinion Post by Greg_650 on 06/18/05 at 09:29:07 On the Ural site, the only bike with telescopic forks in the Wolf. The hacks have a shock "type" suspension on the front....as you said, for a side car. And you got to ride in a side car? Now, I bet that is a rush. Me, I've always wondered if the driver might forget how close the side car was to things like parked cars, trees, curbs, and people....gotta trust the driver ::) |

Title: Re: Need an opinion Post by diesel on 06/18/05 at 21:25:30 thoes forks on a hacked rigs are "Earles" type forks, had 'em on my new 1957 BMW R50 solo bike. at very slow speeds, they make for heavy steering. not too desireable charecteristic for a 2 wheeler. |

Title: Re: Need an opinion Post by WD on 06/19/05 at 22:45:58 CZ 125!!! Yes!!! I'm NOT the only person here who knows what a CZ is! Have a 1974 CZ 175 for sale at work. I want it. And "Mike the Roach", a Yamaha 650 Midnight Heritage Special (gold trimmed, alloy wheeled, disc braked version). AND a GL500, 1982 vintage... I need a raise. Just got a $1.15/hour raise...need another one soon...I NEED more toys...(like I need a hole in my head)... Oh, to get back on track, the Ural is direct imported by a shop 5 miles from the shop I work at. The newer ones are decent. Good luck finding readily accessible spare parts though... -WD |

Read that the design was a joint venture between the Factory and a Russian Biker club called the Night Wolves |

Title: Re: Need an opinion Post by slavy on 06/20/05 at 09:19:43 Stay away from the Urals and the chinese pieces of junk. I don't know the new Urals, but I have some opinion about the old ones and it is- no good for US. Not designed to last at higher speeds. Low Quality manufacturing. |

I guess yours doesn't burn oil on the highway! unless you consider oil fuel! LOL! ..and let's not forget spraypaint! I'm gonna start ripping stuff off the savage soon, too! Don't get me wrong either... I still ride the heck out of the savage... Mine gets all sorts of looks 'cause it's sooo fugly. A harley guy asked me the otehr day "What the h*ll is that?" Proudly, "Suzuki Single!" It's funny, cause my V* "needs" accessories, but my savage? Mmmm, no. I love those buckhorn bars... |

Title: Re: Need an opinion Post by bonnebike on 06/20/05 at 20:09:54 Triumph Bonneville! Sure it's got two cylinders, but the pistons go up and down at the same time. Double your thumps! :D [Don't have the savage yet, so I've been lurkin' here for a while, but my wife's going to pick it up in a couple of days.] |

Title: Re: Need an opinion Post by babbalou on 06/20/05 at 20:39:04 I've wondered what kind of bike I'd get if I were to get another one in a few years. One thing I'd like is to spend no money or time having to upgrade anything. It would have to be comfortable, versatile & low maintenance & fit my style of riding. I like the Suzuki V-Strom 650 but the Triumph Bonneville has had my interest for years so I hope to have one someday. Belt drive has spoiled me though. 8) |
