Title: newer than a newbie Post by DeniseG on 06/16/05 at 17:57:18 Hello all...I've been lurking for awhile....while waiting for the title to come in for my 2001 savage that I bought from a friend. It is finally here after 3 months!!! It's legal now and Hubby is going to teach me to ride. :D I've always wanted a bike and now at 37 I've finally got it! WoooHooo! Just wanted to introduce myself and I've really enjoyed reading your posts! Wisper |

I don't think I can wait any longer...LOL Hubby is a good and patient teacher and has 30 yrs experience. But..if they weren't so booked, I'd love to take the course. |

Title: Re: newer than a newbie Post by Paladin on 06/16/05 at 18:50:09 IIRC * The MSF course starts with you sitting on the bike, putting it into first gear, and, feet firmly on the ground stretched forward, you ease out the clutch to rock forward pushing into your feet then clutch and rock back. Repeat until you have a feel for where the clutch engages. Next step is to roll forward a dozen feet or two then stop. Repeat until comfortable. Then repeat with a 1-2 shift. Then go on to turns, panic stops, etc. * = if I recall correctly... Memory is the second thing to go. You finish with pulling up next to a Sportster at a traffic light and leaving him in the dust as you laugh manically ;D |

Actually...I have had one lesson...my driveway is about 100 feet long, so I've taken it for a couple of short spins up and down the drive. Also took my first spill on a very tight turn in the parking area and I stalled in 2nd gear and tipped. Hoped none of the neighbors was looking at the time! |

It cost a little more, but at least it wasn't a lottery system like the MD state class. We had really nice guys as instructors, and I passed the license test at the end of the class. Okay, my test was ugly, but it's pass/fail. I had never ridden before, so I was a little surprised that I passed. It's a lot of info to learn in a four-day course. You do have to ride a cheesy Buell Blast. The Savage is a much nicer bike. Of course, if you wreck it, the Blast isn't your problem. The ones in class all had plenty of scrapes and missing turn signals. |

Women in their mid 30s and older are buying Savages because they are sized right for most female riders. A 26 inch seat height falls right in with the average height of North American women. And the peg to seat to bars relationship is sized accordingly. My wife has an 800 Intruder, but, if I take the truck to work, she's out riding the Savage. Have fun. Welcome to the loony bin. :D -WD |

In the class I took, we had two people that already had their licenses and were riding their bikes to the class. They both said they learned a lot. Congrats again. |

From never being on a bike Sat. morning to passing the road test on Sun. afternoon. Amazing course. Just bought Nighttrain's Savage. (Sorry. I made him remove the forward controls. Got a little over 400 miles under my belt in just a few short weeks. I ride to work every day I can. Our state msf course was booked til August , too. But I managed to get in as a walk in when someone didnt show. Suzuki Sam my course is this weekend also! Have fun! |

It will do what you want it to do ;) I had the same jitter on the night before my MSF class. But once I was on the bike for half hour doing all the things that Paladin mentioned, I felt like I was riding MC all my life(never ride MC before :o) Enjoy your MSF class and many open-road ahead ;D SavageDude |
