Title: newer than a newbie
Post by DeniseG on 06/16/05 at 17:57:18

Hello all...I've been lurking for awhile....while waiting
for the title to come in for my 2001 savage that I bought from a friend.  It is finally here after 3 months!!!

It's legal now and Hubby is going to teach me to ride.  :D

I've always wanted a bike and now at 37 I've finally got it! WoooHooo!

Just wanted to introduce myself and I've really enjoyed reading your posts!

Denise, I was in your shoes just 2 months ago!  Congratulations!  This weekend is my Motorcycle Saftey Foundation course.  According to most of the folks here, it's a good idea for beginners.  That might help you along too.

Thanks!
I tried to get into the DMV motorcycle course here in NJ, but it's booked solid till after August sometime!
I don't think I can wait any longer...LOL
Hubby is a good and patient teacher and has 30 yrs experience.
But..if they weren't so booked, I'd love to take the course.

IIRC *

The MSF course starts with you sitting on the bike, putting it into first gear, and, feet firmly on the ground stretched forward, you ease out the clutch to rock forward pushing into your feet then clutch and rock back.  Repeat until you have a feel for where the clutch engages.

Next step is to roll forward a dozen feet or two then stop.  Repeat until comfortable.

Then repeat with a 1-2 shift.

Then go on to turns, panic stops, etc.

* = if I recall correctly...  Memory is the second thing to go.

You finish with pulling up next to a Sportster at a traffic light and leaving him in the dust as you laugh manically

;D

LOL!

Actually...I have had one lesson...my driveway is about 100 feet long,  so I've taken it for a couple of short spins
up and down  the drive.  Also took my first spill on a very tight turn in the parking area and I stalled in 2nd gear and tipped.  Hoped none of the neighbors was looking at the time!

Welcome!  My story's similar.  36, the S40's my first bike -- got it in February.  You are going to LOVE this bike.  ;D

(And what is it with women in their mid-30's getting Savages/S40s?)   :)

I took my MSF (Rider's Edge) class through a Harley dealer in Baltimore.  It cost a little more, but at least it wasn't a lottery system like the MD state class.  We had really nice guys as instructors, and I passed the license test at the end of the class.  Okay, my test was ugly, but it's pass/fail.  I had never ridden before, so I was a little surprised that I passed.  It's a lot of info to learn in a four-day course.

You do have to ride a cheesy Buell Blast.  The Savage is a much nicer bike.  Of course, if you wreck it, the Blast isn't your problem.  The ones in class all had plenty of scrapes and missing turn signals.

Well, at least you got your first "drop" out of the way early.

Women in their mid 30s and older are buying Savages because they are sized right for most female riders. A 26 inch seat height falls right in with the average height of North American women. And the peg to seat to bars relationship is sized accordingly. My wife has an 800 Intruder, but, if I take the truck to work, she's out riding the Savage.

Have fun. Welcome to the loony bin.  :D

Congrats - sign up for the course in August. It will be worth it. In the class I took, we had two people that already had their licenses and were riding their bikes to the class. They both said they learned a lot.

Congrats again.

Hello all!

Just took the MSF course last weekend. From never being on a bike Sat. morning to passing the road test on Sun. afternoon. Amazing course. Just bought Nighttrain's Savage. (Sorry. I made him remove the forward controls. I'll probably put them back on when I get a little more comfortable.)

Just wanted to say hi.

Well, I guess I'm of average height for North American women ... but I'm a guy ... and the LS fits me perfectly!

Congrats Denise ... and welcome to the fold (and the "looney bin" as WD put it ... this place is GREAT!) ... I started Ridin' at 41 back in '02 ... you're gonna love it! And the Savage/S40 is so unique that you're gonna love it too!!
Ride Safe.

Paula, good luck to you this weekend!  I'm sitting in my hotel right now working away the jitters! :-/

Suzuki Sam,

Good luck to you, too.  Stomp those jitters. And enjoy all that learning you'll get.

Our instructor told us to come in hung over so we wouldn't be too stressed.  Said he'd rather see us riding loose than white-knuckled.

I figured he was right.  It seemed to work.

I considered that  ;)  but then I figured it wouldn't look too good for me if I giggled through the whole thing, or winced every time a bike started up!  ;D

Suzuki_Sam

Just relax :D When you have the feel+control of the clutch, front brake and throttle, you and the bike will become one. It will do what you want it to do ;)

I had the same jitter on the night before my MSF class. But once I was on the bike for half hour doing all the things that Paladin mentioned, I felt like I was riding MC all my life(never ride MC before :o)

Enjoy your MSF class and many open-road ahead  ;D

I think it is one of those AMIMAL MAGNATISM things that is going on here.  With all of the ruggedly handsome  and virile men who already ride Savages, there is just a natural attraction  for the same kind of motorcycle  that the men are riding.  There is absolutely nothing to be worried about or ashamed of...it is completely normal behavior.
Just smile and enjoy the ride.

By the way, welcome aboard.

LOL, Don't know which could have said that better,
Homer Simpson or Cliff Claven?  :)
