Was this the weekend for the "Mountain Ride"?
Regardless, I will try once again to post a picture...have not been very successful lately but here goes:

8)Well, seeing as I'm 4000 miles away from the Savage Run to Mount St. Helen's, I did the next best thing ... a wee run to Mount Pearl, Nfld. ... where I spent my formative years learning the finer points of juevenile delinquentcy.

Here's a pic taken this morning of my Savage in front of Mount Pearl City Hall
Another one of my stops today, was to check out a piece of aviation history ... billionaire/adventurer Steve Fossit is in town with his replica WW1 Vickers Vimy biplane to re-create the 1919 flight from St. John's, Nfld. to Ireland ... the first non-stop trans-atlantic powered flight by Englishmen Alcaulk and Brown ...

Good Job....I like the resourcefulness of using your helmet as a tripod.

We'll be out of here at 9:00 AM pacific time....5 hours of time for a leisurely ride, 125 miles to Mt. St. Helens.

Right now the view of the volcano is cloudy, but here is a semi-live web cam of the mountain....

Mount St. Helens (http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/msh/)

At around 14:30  pacific time you should see a few Savages riding on the lava dome  8)

Thunder showers here >:(   We were actually under Tornado watch yesterday, which is rare for this part of Canada.

This was also supposed to be my 40th birthday celebration, (which is actually on Tuesday) which would have consisted of a camping trip with a couple of buddies  to kierstead Mountain, about 50 miles from where I live.

Been very few sunny days this spring....Only had 3 in may..........this sucks, big time. :-/

I spent 3 hours Friday night, washing and waxing the bike, for the trip.  :'(

here is my forecast as verification...........Remember..it updates several times a day, so look quick.....LOL

cheers

Well we found a Mountain this morning - this was the first ride on the Silver '02 after the carb up jet to a 155, shaved the spacer some more and added the jardine yesterday!

Ready to go.....

They were predicting rain all day - and it cleared up. ;D  I got to do the ride, then I got all happy about the weather staying clear, rode around some more, and ran out of gas.  :P  At least now I know the fuel lever works.

So anyway.  Here's why I left Brooklyn for Georgia -- this is around the corner from my house.  Not a mountain, but foothills deserve some love too.

And then, because I doubt it counts as a ride if you don't actually go anywhere, I rode into Auburn.  This one's down the street from the city hall, on Mt. Moriah Road.

Clutching with three fingers, a shorter ride than originally intended, but I had to go.  Also picked up an offering for the better half who is putting up with my disappearing when I have things that need doing sround the house.

Downtown Manhattan Beach, about two blocks from the ocean.  Absolutely no parking within a half dozen blocks.  So I rode up the curb and parked it right in front of their window.  ;D

Well have I got a story for you. Saturday was forecasted Thunderstorms most of the day. I had to work so I got up and checked the radar before heading out. A large mass of storms heading my way but they where about 30 miles out and moving 40-50mph so that gave me 45-50mins to get to work. It normally takes about 35mins to get there and I need to add 10mins to get gas. So I knew from the get-go it would be tight. I said the H#&& with it I got to do it for Sluggo and the rest. I hoped on the bike and went. I was about 15mins from work riding directly toward the approaching storm when it appeared. Before me rose the biggest rainbow I have ever seen in my life. IT WAS AMAZING. It was like a sign from God saying its ok. Until then I was worried that I would be stuck at work or be riding home in a thunderstorm. That is something you don’t do in Oklahoma where hail falls from the sky more often than bird poo and 60mph gust are the norm 80 are common and 130 are heard of (during a storm). Tulsa is Twister city after all. Anyway I pulled under the awning at work right as it started to rain. I walked into work to the usual comments “are you nucking futs” and what the H#&& are you thinking. A taunting chorus of your going to get wet and all that. With a smile I replied I’ll bet you all a dollar this blows over by 11:00 am which was 4hrs away. Need less to say the guys at work bought my lunch and gas to drive to lookout mountain in Tulsa. There is no sign so I didn’t get any pic of the sign but I did get the following does that count? Look how pretty the sky looks!! this was around 12:30 pm

Post by sluggo on 06/13/05 at 00:16:31

well i'm back from my 450 mile (350 today) trip to mt st . helens and meeting greg and julie. wow what a great ride. pictures to follow.
i started the trip on saturday by riding the first 100 miles in the afternoon, i then left thumper in the hotel room while my wife and i drove the cage home so i could announce our speedways biggest race of the season. we then drove back to the hotel and crashed, sunday morning at the crack of noon we headed out up white pass to mt st helens. it was a bit chilly and just a few drops of rain an hour in.  i made a slight miscalculation on i distance and time so i missed the 1430 meet with greg and julie, but was able to cross paths on the road. we stopped and chatted, looking over the machines. the word that comes to mind when looking at greg's is "clean". julies has some really nice touches and my wife thinks is "prettier". i also believe that's julies story and she's sticking too it.  there was a gift shop/coffee house where we sat and swapped stories of the road. it appears many other riders of all types of machines got the memo of mountain day, because many made the trip to st helens.  :D

we made our good byes and split up  for the ride home. as i rode through the mountains atune to all the sounds being made by the machine i could hear the change in tone the tires made as i worked the curves, or was that just the squealing as i really got to widen the contact patch.
drafting the wifes cage i was able to make it the last 110 miles back to the farm. last trip i fell 2.5 miles short and had to call for her to come with fuel.

It's cool to see all the photos from everyone who was able to ride out and find a 'mountain'!  No such luck here.  Rained too much.  Can we try again on another weekend?  Maybe change it to 'lake' day?

Jenn:

I too was rained out (see above post)

I think Lake day is a great idea.

Decide a day, and I'm in!.

Could be lake, river, pond, ocean, etc....Heck.even a large puddle.

Well here's my feeble attempt. This is a ridge in the Ozark "Mountains" in south Missouri and north Arkansas. I probably should have used a fill flash to show the bike better since the light apparently "tricked" the meter. It's a new camera I'm still learning. Oh well. It was getting late, a storm was moving in (as shown by the clouds), and I still had 2 hours to ride to get home. Got home at 10:35 pm amid lightening strikes! I don't do well with lightening since a little incident in Vietnam.

I guess the pic will show in the post though it doesn't in the preview. If not I'll try again.

Greg - thanks, you had a great "subject." (in addition to the bike of course.) Must have been a beautiful ride.

Sluggo -  thanks. I was trying to get the pic in the post. How'dja do it?

It brings up a question. Is there a preference in putting the pics in the post and slowing down the load times versus putting links in the posts and then having to click the links but the thread would load faster (for us still using dialup)?

I'll be putting a few more pics on bikepics over the next couple days if anyone wants to look.

Yep.  Our distance was only 258 miles, round trip.  About 100 miles of it was interstate with the rest on 2 lanes at around 45 mph (the best part).  We left home at 9:30 am, met Sluggo around 3:00, and after about an hours visit we headed home...got back at 8:00.

Oh yeah, I rode without a windshield for the first time in 5 years.  The Savage does handle much better without it, but I must be getting old...I just don't like bugs anymore.  I even caught one inside my full face somehow, and had to ride a few miles with it crawling around on my ear ('bout drove me nuts).  The windshield goes back on  ::)

All i can say is amen to the windshield - just added one to the '02 - these dang gulf coast bugs are plated with titanium and carry spears best i can tell - a squadron of 6 inch dragonflies is not much fun to hit without one.

Wanna hear my Dragonfly story?

I was riding in my rural neighborhood one day, wearing my full face helmet and I had my face shield open (I never learn).  Anyway, I was doing about 60 mph when a big ol' bug smacked me right in the face, near my eye.

The poor sucker was mostly likely stunned as he hit me full force.  I was doing 60 and he was probably doing 15-20mph himself.  That's a 75-80mph head-on collision for him!

Well anyway, as I said, he was stunned...and he fell...into my shirt.  At first, I was unaware of this, since my shirt isn't tight fitting and was sort of blowing around.  But eventually (about a mile down the road) said bug... came to.  And began to buzz around.

I was approaching an intersection so I came to a full stop, flipped into neutral, kicked the side stand down and took a gander into the neck of my shirt.  Sure enough, there about mid-belly was this HUGE FREAKING DRAGONFLY.  I'm a girl...I don't DO bugs.  I freaked out and did one of them "little girl dress over the head" things and pulled that shirt right up.  The bug in question departed the premesis and I put my shirt down only to see three cars stopped in the intersection.

One woman, in a pick-up truck was wiping tears from her eyes and laughing her arse off at me.  I didn't stick around long enough to see who was in the other two vehicles.  I live in a VERY small town and I'm sure this is going to come back to haunt me at some point.

But it WAS funny...and it earned me the nickname "Flash" on another forum.
