Title: fuel supply valve (fuel tap)

In what position do you place the fuel supply valve if the bike is going to sit for a while?  Most bikes have an off setting but I don't see one on our bikes.

You leave it in the ON position because if the petc0ck is working correctly the fuel is off.

Greg is right - leave it in "ON "and don't forget to drain the fuel from the float bowl.
When You decide to ride the bike, just turn the F. valve in PRI for 10- 15 sec. and again turn it in ON for normal use.

Schmear,

The Savage has a vacuum tube going from the carb to the petcaulk.  When you start the bike, there's normally enough residual gas in the carb to fire it up.  Once it's running the intake vacuum opens a valve on the petcaulk and lets gas flow.

If your bike sits long enough to allow the gas to dry out or otherwise not be there anymore, the bike won't start unless you turn the petcaulk to PRIME.  Gas will flow unfettered into the carb and you can start it after a few moments.  Then you turn it back to the normal down position.

Some folks reports that leaving it on prime causes no uncontrolled flow of gas, spilling out or into the crankcase, but the manual says don't leave it there, and therefore I don't.  I see no reason to tempt fate.  At least not at the current price of gasoline.

I prefer a dirt bike style on/off/res that does not try to read my mind for me.

How can it know what personality I am today? ;D

I like the stock setup just fine...at least until it fails to work correctly.  Then I'll do something.

You're right - that's what drove me to fix it, it messed up.  Root cause analysis drove me to the manual valve solution.

KLX is on/off/res which I like.
SR500 is a vacuum tap which I'm thinking about changing.

The petc0ck is like the safety interlocks...no one likes things being done for them.  Even if they work  ::)

BTW - did anyone ever find out if they have a frame or petc0ck that is different to the point that they CAN'T remove their tank?

Seems like that topic died without an answer to why some people claim they must remove the petc0ck to remove the tank.

I don't think it is a frame/ petkock difference- it is more of a personal way of pulling off the gas tank. Try this:
1. unscrew and disconnect the gas tank
2. push forward
3. up
4. back

I don't want to say , the gas tank will go out by itself, but I think the "push forward and then up" is the key. You might slightly pull left and twist with the "up".

I never thought there was a difference in anything more than experience and technique either.  However there are those that swear it cannot be done without removing the petc0ck first.

Mine comes off with petc0ck intact, it just scratches up the frame which is then covered when the tank goes back on so no big deal really.

It is however very irritating the stankin thang is right in the perfect spot to cause a headache during tank removal/replacement.
