Title: Best/worst modifications?
Post by WD on 03/21/05 at 02:48:38

We've all done great things to our bikes. We've all tried not so great things on our bikes.

My best mod: leather solo seat and apehangers. I now fit the bike better.
My worst mod: kind of a toss up between JC Whitney exhaust, JC Whitney grip/lever trim, and a Cheng Shin rear tire. All are pure, undeniable garbage.
Take it or leave it mod: Stainless brake hose; Looks okay, probably works better, takes forever to bleed the air out. Honda headlight; the stock plastic LS unit snapped off, the Rebel light looks good, is made out of metal, and works great if I want to go raccoon poaching.

Anyone else care to share your good and bad parts so someone else doesn't make the same mistakes?

you all have seen the best, now here's the worst.

that baseball sized dent in gastank. it wasn't an intentional mod, just kinda happend in the "high ho silver away" incident. :'(  i'll fixit one day.  i've got a tank that i'm practicing on.  when i get good enough i'll take on the real tank.

at 48 years old and never having drank, i appreciate you're being cool with it. i wish more were.  you see i'm pretty kewl with people who drink right up till the point they get behind the wheel. then that changes.

I am about to pull the trigger on these bags for $40. What do you know about cheap bags?

stiching and rivet quality are important. take the time to look them over carefully for any imperfections.

and 40 dollars is the number i look at when looking for a bag   8)

They look OK for cheapies.  I've a  similar fork bag and sissy bar bag. I've found the inexpensive leather tends to be stiff and dry.  I've not done it myself self but I's think a waxing down with saddle soap and a good leather polish might go a long way towards preservation and appearance.

If those are priced like Sluggo advises, it might be an OK deal.  I've seen some real sweet looking bags for $80 at  local bike parts shop.  Much much nicer for just a little more.

But, those might be just fine for carrying a camera, cell phone, water, spare shorts, condoms, etc.

It looks like the lid may not seal too well over the sides of the bag if you are carrying electronics, camera, etc.. You could put them in a ziplock type bag if needed.  Also, Snow Seal works real good to soften leather and make it waterproof. Until it dries it does attract dust and dirt but it doesn't take long to dry and then you can wipe it clean.
I used a bicycle bag for a handlebar bag behind the windshield. It is nylon and has zippers to close it up good. I carry gloves, hat, map, grease pencil (for mileage) and a mirror for checking oil. No condoms! The little woman (who is 5" taller than me) wouldn't like it and they are not needed!
The leather definitely looks better though!

Sluggo, we need to have a little chat...

No, not about that! Let me know how your tank repair turns out, you can't tell in the photos, but roughly 25% of my tank has been caved in. Bike took exception to being on a trailer, fell onto the tire that wasn't covered by a fender. Bondo'd the dent, want the gas capacity back. I used to dump the gas and touch off a model rocket igniter in the petc0ck hole...works maybe 1 in 20 tanks...

Uh, dare I ask, what happened to the other 19 tanks when it didn't work. ??? Your not performing the "big bang" theory of motorcycle repair are you? ;D

WD, didn't I see you in a safety film about what "not to do" when making repairs?  Please film it the next time you do this, I, along with everyone else here, would love to see this.  Maybe you'll be on the next episode of Max Exposure.

Back to the original post, the worst mod I made was putting the liscense plate on the side of the bike.  When I put it there, you could really see how offset the back wheel is.  Plus, it just looked funny on the side.  Quickly put it back.
Best mod?  By far, the Slipstreamer windshield.  It's a little big, but it is great when the weathers crappy.  Has just enough coverage to protect the hands as well as the face.  Best $200 spent.

WD, I've heard about filling the tank with water and placing it in a freezer. But I don't know if that would work on a 25%er.

I've also heard rumors about buying a used one on eBay.  ;D

eBay rocks.

Hands-down, the best mod was the combination of white spacer mod, carb rejet, and air filter & exhaust replacement.
After that, I'd have to say I really love my fork brace and trunk.  It would be easy to forget things like Kuryakyn grips and a sheepskin seat cover that have made everyday riding so much nicer but they are great.

For worst mod I think it'd have to be adding the Digital Tachometer (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=524744&R=524744).  While it worked wonderfully for the first few weeks, it appears to have succumbed to the vibration level of the bike and sometimes works and other times resets and flashes random crap.  It was a good idea but in actual practice, please save your money for one designed for a bike.

Though it's not actually a bike mod, I really have to say how pleased I am with my new Scorpion (http://www.scorpionusa.com/) EXO-400.  This is easily the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn.  While helmet fit is often partly a function of head shape, I must heartily recommend that anyone in the market for a full-face splathat try this one on and see if it works for them.  The price is quite good for both the EXO-400 (polycarbonate) and the EXO-700 (fiber composite) and both are DOT & Snell approved.  Personally, I was unable to feel a weight difference, so I went with the less expensive polycarbonate.  It's comfortable, quiet and priced far better than any comparable helmet I've seen.  The anti-fog shield WORKS.  I found out after I ordered a mirrored shield that only the clear and smoked shields have the anti-fog treatment, so please remember that if youu order any.  I am still pleased with the mirrored shield though and the breath deflector helps reduce fogging on it fairly well - though nothing as startling as the anti-fog shields.  The Aero Skirt is a worthwhile addition too, both for cold weather and additional quiet.  I found the helmet priced about the same wherever I looked but Nationspeed Warehouse (http://nationspeed.com/) offered a second shield of your choice for an additional $9 at the time of helmet purchase, which is a great deal.

The best modification for the money has to be a rejetting of the main and cutting the white spacer down. Installing a Superbrace on the front forks tightened up the steering on my '02, I would recomend it to anybody who has the cash. Jacking up the front of the seat is the third mod I would recomend.  Bad modifications I've tried include trying to convert a sportster seat to a savage, turned out very ugly and uncomfortable.

Best mod by far was adding the highway hawk forward controls, folllowed by a Raask pipe and then the z bars. The worst mod (even though I love the look) was removing the front fender. Getting stuck in the rain convinced me to put it back on :-)

Best: Forward controls,  Seeger Germany
Butterfly HD steeringbar, raising seat, fly- or not to high windscreen.
Worst: I dont do any. :-/ :-/ :-/
