Title: Non standard wheels
Post by klx650sm2002 on 03/19/05 at 02:39:13

Has anyone fitted a 16" or 17" on the back or perhaps a 16", 17" or 21" on the front.

I've thought about exploring a 21 on the front, but not smaller.

I was thinking a pair of fat tires would be a good look for the Savage.

Fat might work with changed fenders.....hmmm.

My next tire on my 3.5/17 front rim is 120/60.
Problem, the smallest matching rear is a 140/70/17 true size 147mm I think too wide for the Savage.

Here's an Exile Cycles style Savage Custom that was featured in a British M/C mag ... note the beefy tires front & rear. Seems that mounting such tire would require wider trees & swingarm?

I like the tires, but can you say, "no suspension"?

Yeah, that looks like a rigid ... unless it's a soft-tail and there's a mono-shock under there somewhere that we can't see in the photo ...

Oh, but look at the front fork travel too.  There ain't no springs in there...

I have had the idea in the back of my mind for awhile now to get a set of sportster wheels  (very cheap on ebay...sometimes with the brakes still on them, and it has a disc brake on the rear) ...no spokes to mess with or adjust, besides I like the look of the stock mag wheel on the sportster.  The Yamaha SR 500 had the same type of wheel back in 89.  The sportster rear wheel is a 140/90/16, so the width should be OK.  Get a shock with a little more length.  The larger wheel/tire combo would jack up the overall ratio which would let the Savage cruise at a lower rpm on the highway...and there would be other rear belt pully's to choose from if you did not like the ratio.   Anyway, sometime, maybe.

I've fitted TZR 250 three spokes on my SR they are less than half the weight, got to be good.

Oh, you guys have me curious.  How do you deal with the axle size?  They can't all be the same.  Sleeve them, different bearings, or what?  I have to try this.  Please advise.

On my SR I made the steering stem fit the TZR trees so I have TZR forks, mudgaurd and disc (320mm) with AP four pot caliper and AP adjustable ratio m/cylinder.
On the back I have std. TZR brakes (210mm disc), wheel and a shortened aluminium swingarm.
A long term project.

goose that was my quote, but it still applies.  billet cut wheels belong on what i call MOTORCYCLE JEWELRY, made by builders whose show you see on tv frequently.
machines built for looks or the ocasional trip to the show.

well except the late indian larry and kendall. they build great looking riding machines.

give me a ratt bike daily rider piece o cr@p any day of the week.

My 65 Buick's got Dayton wire spokes.  They look better than the Savage spokes.  What are they, galvanized on the Savage?

I think simple chariot/cart cast mag spokes look ok, but I agree that true spokes look best.

I don't know if they are galvanised or not, but I do know they don't shine up too well.  They certainly won't sparkle.  At least mine don't.

That may also vary from year to year, AFAICT.

Yeah, know whatcha mean about the Savage's spokes ... my Bike is less than 2 years old and the spokes are about as bright as a cloudy Monday ... too bad, 'cause real chrome spokes wouldn't have added much to the overall cost of the Bike, but would've help with keeping the look fresh longer ...

I have stainless spokes on my KLX, still have to polish the aluminium rims regularly though.
