Title: Footpeg mounts
Post by Nightrain on 03/02/05 at 08:28:11

Does anyone see any downside to welding solid steel rod to a bike as footpegs. I know that the norm is to have footpegs that Swivel up 45 degrees but I cant figure out the reasoning behind it. Just an Idea  ???

i believe thats to allow a little more clearance in cornering(leaning)....

i scrape my pegs alot on some corners.

i could be wrong though

i broke off my right hand peg early.

i now use a hardend steel carriage bolt with the rubber off the original peg.

i have never once dragged it, and i do get a little wild and crazy with ole thumper.  it did bend a little in the dog v thumper incident  :(

You can also look at it like this...what do you want to be the weakest point if your footpeg hits the ground hard?  Would you rather have the force taken by the footpeg or the frame downtube?

I'd say it is again safety issue. If You are leaning and the footpeg ketches on something or hits on something and there is no give, You might roll over.
If You take a look at the dirt bikes even the foot brake lever and the gear shifter are spring loaded on a pivot point.

Sure, safety is an issue.  I've felt mine float along the roadside too  8)

But, I was assuming that "welding a solid steel rod to a bike as footpegs" meant the rod would be welded directly to the frame tube (not the chrome mounts) and that would create a weak point at the frame.

I was being supplemental and don't figure it to be desireable, either way.

KLX has folding footpegs and a folding gear lever but not a brake lever.

Kawasaki must have intended for KLXs to fall down more often  ;D

If your peg can fold up and you touch it down it will only spark and scrape and you can continue your turn. If your peg is solid it will touch, spark, and if you continue to lean it is now a lever/pivot point. Your rear wheel will lift, spin you around and spit you off before you know what happened. You never want solid parts to be the first thing to touch.
