Title: Pod Filters Post by DangMan on 02/16/05 at 12:46:17 Has anyone some experience with pod filters on the savage ! I think the look pretty cool ! http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/pod_filters.htm |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Nightrain on 02/16/05 at 16:18:22 Sure thing man. It's a dirct bolt on. 1. Remove the factory airbox (big platic box about the size of a happymeal) under the seat. 2. Measure the opening of the rubber inlet hose (I was told you still need to retian the rubber inlet hose) 3. Puchse a cone shaped filter that with an opening that will fit in the hole of the rubber thing. 4. Enjoy more air flow and better performance. Oh, and you might have to re-jet your carb, depending on how much more air flow you get. I guess you will have to chop the plug to know for sure. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by DangMan on 02/16/05 at 21:52:22 Tnx, that looks like a easy thing to do 8) |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by klx650sm2002 on 02/17/05 at 02:04:30 On My KLX I removed the whole air box, filter, carb assembly and replaced it with a keihin FCR41. Anyway I researced ram pipes and decided I could make a better one. I did this and fitted it with a pod type filter (flat end with a hole in , no rubber molding). First test ride and the thing would only do 75mph, came home, took the filter off and went out again, 90mph in the same place, the carb had been sucking the filter in. I made an aluminium thing to go in the filter and poke through the end and fixed it to the frame with a cable tie, no more filter sucking and I'm a happy chap. Top speed is limited to about 95 by stability problems but man it gets there fast. Clive W :D |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by klx650sm2002 on 02/17/05 at 02:25:16 The filter I fitted to KLX was a foam one, you shouldn't get "filter sucking" with the filters you guys are gong to use. Clive W :D |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Gargoyle on 02/17/05 at 06:48:00 I put on a K&N clamp on pod filter. Works well however it was part of rejetting. I also changed exhaust. I paid alot for K&N then found the filters on the link you posted. I would like to try them if I need to replace the K&N. They are much less expensive. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by slavy on 02/17/05 at 14:06:13 First don't be sorry. You pay once, it hurts once, You enjoy it every time You ride. Soon You will forget the pain, but fun will stay. Second- one of the main rules in USA is- "You get what You pay for". |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Greg_650 on 02/18/05 at 07:07:50 I removed the whole airbox, moved the battery to the rear and installed a K&N pod filter. You don't want to forget the crankcase breather, so I installed a breather filter out in the air stream and used the stock hose. Now I have more room to work on the carb, too. http://home.comcast.net/~gmdinusa/KandN08_1web.jpg |

Clive, I hadn't forgotten about the FCR41 carb yet, either :D I guess that now it will have to be next winter, though |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by klx650sm2002 on 02/19/05 at 06:58:18 Hey Greg, hope You still get the chance to open that exhaust port up. Clive W :D |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Greg_650 on 02/19/05 at 07:06:27 I'm afraid that the riding season is fast approaching, and I'll likely have to wait until next winter. At this time, I have plenty of just normal maintenance that needs to be done anyway. I have 2 bikes that are needing a lot of TLC :P |

Man Greg, I like your relocation of the battery box. Did you do away with the side covers, and where'd you put the spark box? I like your setup alot. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Greg_650 on 02/19/05 at 08:20:08 First I did this...cut off the tops of the battery box brackets and moved them to the rear as far as possible...yep, even I managed to reweld them myself :P http://home.comcast.net/~gmdinusa/BatBox01web.jpg Then, I scratched my head over the ignition unit for quite some time, I admit....I tried to fit it under the seat. I wanted it hidden...so, I moved my toolkit to a tool bag, lengthened the wiring harness a few inches and put the ignition in here. I put the side covers into storage. http://home.comcast.net/~gmdinusa/BatBoxIgnition06web.jpg That extra cable is for a battery tender that I hard wired into the system too. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by sunny on 02/21/05 at 08:30:44 greg, thanks so much for posting pictures of all your hard work. i am in the process of doing some of the stuff you have already done. i don't know if i'll move the battery box back though. i am no welder. right now i am in the process of removing the airbox. it seems to be stuck. i have been trying to remove the belt guard to get at it better(i am thinking there is one more screw to remove behind the guard), but the two screws holding the guard on are stuck tight. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by rkutzner on 02/21/05 at 16:11:11 PLEASE post a pic of the bike fully together ! |

Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by thehoghunter on 02/23/05 at 09:10:13 Greg - thanks for the pics and info on the pod filter and moving the battery - I went another way on mine. Moved the battery box down by cutting the bottom to allow it to fit around the holder that you welded. Moving it down allowed the pod to fit although I ended up moving the pod filter so it faces foward instead of to the rear. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by bobo383 on 02/23/05 at 17:16:01 Hoghunter, you got a picture of the relocated batt box? I'd like to see what it looks like. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Greg_650 on 02/24/05 at 05:34:23 I'd like to further modify mine with a different battery and battery box. Maybe rotate the battery holder logitudinally (sp?) and use a smaller gel bettery set back in closer to the swingarm. |

The breather was just a standard 1/2" breather as I recall. It comes with a mounting stud and nut. I wanted to mount it high so that any condensed oil vapors would gravity feed back to the engine. The stock breather hose was long enough, too. The intake filter is this one. I notched the tank mount to keep it from rubbing. http://home.comcast.net/~gmdinusa/KandN04web.jpg |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by PRH111 on 02/27/05 at 18:44:59 Anyone try riding in the rain with an open element filter like these? If I don't ride in the rain around here I won't be riding very much at all. |

I got caught in one heck of a rain once which I endured for over 80 miles. There was one time that I think that water caused the bike to sputter and stall at a stop sign. It started right back, but I think that water caused it. Just once... |

Looks cool, center of mass & all... But my bad luck says no way! I see unprotected plastic below the pipe? Is it situated so that a pot hole would wedge it against frame? After the bottom is busted out of this battery, and you shut it off, how will you crank it. ??? |

Don't shut it off...just keep driving till you get home. Or push start it. |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by slavy on 03/01/05 at 08:28:51 Not with an electronic ignition. With an old style brake point ignition was OK. |

Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by PerrydaSavage on 03/09/05 at 16:15:22 The new "gel" batteries can be mounted on their side, for a low profile look ... with standard-type battery, I'd be leary of acid leaking out ... |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Greg_650 on 03/12/05 at 06:43:53 While we are on the subject of "Pod Filters" ::) Here is the K&N cleaner and oil for the filters. I bought this at Auto Zone. Plenty for a few years. http://home.comcast.net/~gmdinusa/KandN09web.jpg |
Title: Re: Pod Filters Post by Tony on 03/12/05 at 10:20:40 I may be wrong about the battery, but it looks to me like there might be a triangular chromed mount that seems to cover 95% or so of the battery bottom. I realize that it is still possible to hit it, but it looks like it might take some abuse before failing. http://savage.andruschak.net/batteryhide.jpg |
