Just jokin'    I always thought your bike with the Duc front end really looked cool.  It had (has) a lot of potential.

We'll, there's plenty of folks with advice here.  I've never dug in that far, so I've nothin to offer.

I'll tell you what, if that was my bike I'd never paint it.  Just get it running good and let it look like a snarling old bar fighter.

MAKE THAT A FIREBREATHING RATT BIKE

honestly, it shows the true strength of the basic platform, and the many directions on which you can build from it.  we all have.

FWIW, IMHO, the Rat Bike is the acme of motorcycles.  Pure practibility, no show.  What is simplier and rattier than a Thumper?

After 12 years my DT175 was a rat.  I could park it with the key in the ignition without fear anyone would ride off on it.  Wendy's '72 Camaro is a rat with 180,000+ original miles.  In a dozen years or so my Savage will become a rat.

Well i think im just going to neaten it up and make sure all is secure, wiring etc... then just NEVER clean it... like what the youngsters in thge 80's over hear used to do to cars..

should also have a load more punch and a lot quicker, you know how much the rear tailpeice/seats and original wheel and forks weihg??? the answer is A Lot, I can almost pick the bike up now, as lots of ally on the front and nothing on the back..... so that in mind, my four pot caliper should come in handy... :-)

Whats the issue getting the crank nut off?  If its just holding the flywheel maybe I can help with a tip or two. I know a few tricks to do that. Simple and cheap...

Ok.... remove spark plug.... determine when piston is coming up for one direction by turning the nut the way you want it to go (losen or tightening)

Get yourself a two foot peice of soft rope. Slightly smaller in diameter than the Spark plug hole.... feed in enough to stop the piston from coming all the way up and starting back down... this soft surface between the top of the piston and the head will hold it... without damage... so you can then really torque on that nut.  The right amount is about 6 or so inches of rope fed in and coiled up at the top of the piston. Doesn't take a lot. Just enough to stop the crank in place so you can really wrench on that nut. Reverse to reinstall.

Most flywheel nuts are very tight. 50 ft pounds or more. So they sometimes want an air wrench to extract. And a good torque wrench to replace. Making sure the Keyway is in place and keeping it tight enough to not shear it. Thats its job is to keep the Flywheel in line with the crankshaft. It does not hold it in place. It just lines it up. As it contains the magnet embeded in it that the HES (Hall Effects Sensor) is taking its signal from to fire on a revolution. So its position is critical to the timing of the bike.  As critical as the Stator is. Its relationship to the stator under the flywheel is part of the timing of the bike. And that key lines that part of it up. It does not hold the flywheel in position. The tourqe of that nut does. And so it has to be tight.

I suggest you put a new Key in when you reassemble. And the right one. It has to be the right material or it might shear prematurely or postmaturely. Get the correct one.

Brillian, Thanks, the rope trick is perfect... its oine of those, 'why didnt i think of that' things... :-)

Altho its the other side i want to get off... (where the cam chain goes behind 'that' big nut) sorry for the baby description, havent seen in her guts for about 6 months so still bit fuzzy as to whats what..

Thanks again.. :-)

Oh and sun umbrella accesory is only 9.95 but only from me (patent pending) comes with two line mounting instructions ;-) hehe

1) remove fuel cap
2) insert unbrella  :P

Put in 5th gear, have someone stand rear brake. works for me. used that trick for many moons on many different makes.

BTW  the rope trick can also be used to hold the valves closed.
This way you can remove the valve springs to change the oilseals around the valve stems.
Used to do that on 4 or 6 cylinder aircraft piston engines.

That's one of those solutions that's so simple, you'd never think of it.

Well someone did.  But not me.
