Title: Are the hex and slotted main jets interchangable?
Post by rkutzner on 12/17/04 at 12:58:25

My local shop only carries hex headed main jets for Mikuni carbs.  The pictures on this site show a slotted head also available.  I found a site that sells both Mikuni jets, though the hex ones are only available in increments of 5.  I won't really know what is in my S40s carb until I open it tommorrow.

http://www.cyclewareables.com/pages/mikuni_main_jets/mikuni_main_jets.htm

Are these interchangable?  Do they really work the same? Should I order the slotted type?  I got a 150 and 155 hex for now.  I was going to put in the 150 with the stock exhaust for winter and the 155 when I get the Supertrapp in the spring.

I just got the large round Mikuni jets.  That's what's on the carb in the first place.  Also, try a Harley shop.  They carry Mikuni jets.   I understand that most of those "American made" HD's use Japanese made Mikuni carbs.

But are they interchangable?  Anyone know?

You'd be wrong...Harleys do use Japenese carbs but not Mikuni.

That's nice guys......but I really need an answer by tomorrow if these jets are interchangable or I'll just be doing the 1/2 spacer thing and checking on what I have.

But if someone has a REAL ANSWER, I could have it all done tommorrow !!!

Please leave the American/Jap thing out of this.  I'm a retired Jarhead and even I know everything is really global...who do you think owns most of the Harley stock....... ;)?

As long as you use one or the other there shouldn't be a problem. If they fit that is  ???

Well, CliveW....you got it right on the 'if they fit' line!  They are a different thread.  So back to the shop to get the right one, which by the way looks like the Mikuni 100/604 mains on the link above.

That's odd because I got Mikuni jets at the HD dealer.  Oh well, maybe they fit other carbs.  I really don't know.

And Rkutzner, I'm sorry but simply did not know if the hex type would fit so I offered what I thought would be an easy way to get the jets I know do fit.  They also carry some on JPcycles.com.

That's quite all right !  Not counting the press in mains, there are 3 types of mains for Mikuni carbs listed on all the site.  I pulled mine out so the next trip I'll get what I need.  It's how you learn.  It's supposed to be cold and sloppy tommorrow and Monday, so I won't be missing any riding ;D

Speaking of 'how you learn', I stripped the head off one of the baby screws in the slide while attempting the 1/2 spacer mod.  Took a large drill bit from the top to pop the head off, then a small bit from the bottom to 'turn' the screw out.....and I was able to prevent needing to buy an $80 part, all I need is a new screw (didn't even booger the threads!).  I slotted them in case I ever go to a Dynojet needle.  So I wouldn't have been riding today anyways......the REAL question is when are these folks gonna start using hex or square hole screws instead of philips on the carbs?  Had similar problems on my ATV.... ::)

I suggest that you open your carb first and take a jet with you.  I think they are interchangeable, but to be safe, compare the threads and the hole diameter by the number on the jet....the correct jets in either shape go in increments of 2.5, not 5.

By the way, before WW II, there was a HD factory in Japan, and the Japs built bikes for their own miltary too.  Besides, most of the electronics in any bike is made in Japan....

Yeah, I got me a whole baggy of stuff to bring with me tommorrow:

The 145 Jet - to make sure I get the right style.

The last good screw from the slide to get a replacement

The bowl screws to replace with hex

I replaced mine with allen head stainless bolts.

On My FCR all the bolts are allen bolts, probably why it costs so much.

Yeah, I took other folks' advice and replaced them with stainless allen bolts both on the float bowl and on the top cover.  After that, I've taken to replacing a number of others with stainless as I happen to think about it.  The two bolts used to retain the front plate for the seat are now also stainless (since I was lengthening them to add spacers anyway) as well as the two bolts that hold the seat on... and a few other low-stress bolts as I notice them and pick up replacements.

I'm in the process of replacing all the low stress bolts with anodised aluminium allen bolts, button heads on all the plastic.

So what you're saying is...... ? ;D

I use aluminium because it is light (pointless I know) doesn't rust and makes me feel good. I use button head allen bolts on the plastic bodywork because they don't dig in.
