Title: Sport Shields
Post by MK on 10/01/04 at 17:17:46

Ok...a newbie with lots of questions.  Here's one:

Do any of you have sport shields on your bikes?  If so do you have much difficulty when it's windy - I've heard some say that it's like having a sail on you bike making it pretty tough to handle in windy conditions.  I'm interested in adding something relatively small (actually the one that Suzuki makes for the bike which looks relatively small in the pic) - looking mostly to cut back on the wind at higher speeds and make it a little less cold as we get into fall the fall season (ok, I'm a cold weather weenie - I'll take 99 degrees over anything below 65!)

Any and all opinions would be appreciated! Thanks.

I have a larger windshield but there are definitely some people riding with smaller shields.  Check out the site below.  Jon has done a great job of sharing his learnings/tips/pics:  Jon's Suzuki Savage Site (http://www.jonline.org/savage)

This is a picture of Jon's bike with his National Cycle Flyscreen.  There are more pics in his photos section.

I have a windshield made by Motoplex, which is pretty much identical to the one suzuki sells, but better quality, and a cheaper  price. I got it for $40 canadian........half price.....reg *80

I find it made a big difference. I can now travel at speeds of 70/m/h plus, and don't bounce around as much as I did before...I tried a bigger shield, but it looked odd to me.........cheers.........Michael

I have a Slipstreamer shield that extends outward to cover my hands.    I wouldn't ride the bike without it.  I took it off a few weeks ago to try a smaller shield that I inherited from a friends VLX 600.  I didn't like the little sport shield like the Slipstreamer, so I swapped back.   I'd give the little shield to anyone that wanted it, just pay for the shipping.  It has to be mildy rigged to make it fit a Savage, but it does work, and it doesn't hurt the handling.

Here's the Slipstreamer, It's a fork mounted shield.  Solid as a rock.

Free to good home.  I'm not sure what brand it is, but it's a good one.  BTW, the yellow Suzuki in the background is the 2004 Vitara that we got a discount on because I had a Suzuki bike.  Saved $500.  Cool.

I have the small shield featured in the picture.  It's an ok shield.  It's straight out of JCWhitney, http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ProductDisplay/s-10101/p-3022/c-10111

It's a maier, style "4", clear shield.  I have the same one with "smoke" tint.  It's an OK shield.  For the money it was alright.  I've not driven shieldless so I'm now curious how the bike handles highspeed without it.  I've noticed some pushing, but what do you expect at 70+ mph on the Interstate?

Around 55 or so (which really IS the Savages main speed range) I've been quite satisfied with the shield. If your looking for any kind of shielding from the elements, well look for another shield.   I find this shield only keeps some of the bugs off and some wind off me directly.  I didn't buy the "Full Fairing" shields because, well, to me the look toy like.

::)

Have fun!

I have a National Cycle Deflector Shield that looks just like SavageThumper's.  The difference in handling is noticable when I remove it (it has a quick-release mechanism), but since I installed it over the winter, first time I got on the bike in the spring it just felt "normal" since I hadn't ridden for a long while.

Wow! Lots of choices - thanks for all the ideas.  Best of all it's good to know that plenty of folks like to ride with a sport shield.

We have a winner.  Bassman 29 will be recieving the shield in the mail soon.  Shouldn't cost much to send.

QUETION FOR SUSAN.(or anyone who wishes to add input)

Hi there....I have a chance to buy a memphis shades windshield. I was wondering what size your shield is. I saw the pics, and think it looks great.

The guy is holding it for me for 24 hours...... It is 17" high, by 22" wide.........I like the fat style, as I think it will protect me more, but I don't want one that is too tall, due to the fact that, one should be able to see over the shield.

I am about 5 foot 9........Hoping the 17" wont't be too tall.

It comes complete with mounting hardware, which I understand is sold seperatly from the company. It is mint condition (no scratches). He wants $125 Canadian, installed, which is about $100 U.S.........Does this sound like a good price?..............thanks......cheers..............

Michael, Mine is the Memphis Slims which is 18" wide and I have the shorter height which is 15" high.  So yours would be 4" wider and 2" taller than mine.

I would guess that the 17" would be ok given your height, but the best way to figure out is to sit on your bike and have someone measure what would be a good height. You want the top of the windshield to reach between the tip and bridge of your nose. See Buying a Windshield that Fits (http://www.memphisshades.com/products.shtml). My husband didn't do this and his windshield is too tall and he gets a lot of helmet buffeting...

The price is very good if it includes the quick mount hardware from Memphis Shades and if the hardware will fit your bike.  The hardware is sturdy, easy to use, and not cheap.  You will want to make sure that the hardware will fit your bike BTW.  They make different hardware for different bikes.  Go to:
http://www.memphisshades.com/fats_metric.shtml
and you should be able to look up the hardware part number for your bike and for the bike the windshield is currently on to see if they are the same.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Susan

Thanks for the quick reply.

Although I never had the windshield on the Savage, I held it up to the bike, and I am pretty sure it will fit. It does include the quick mount hardware...We couldn't find any part # on the hardware, but it came off of a Kawasaki mean streak....I am gonna go to the Memphis shades website and cross refrence the 2 bikes, and see what I come up with.......Cross your fingers, and I will be sure to let you know how I make out.

Thanks again..........cheers

Michael

I've used (and still have on the shelf) the 17" Mephis shades and it will work fine, I think Suzuki Cruiisers and HD are the only one who use 1" diameter bars so that hardware will have to be found. I've got a full dairing on mine and never found any wind shield or fairing to be a sail problem. Max

Used Flyscreen, from eBay, $47.65 delivered:

Mounted it about an hour ago -- just before the rain started falling.

Susan et al

Just an update on the Memphis Shades windshield.

Although the hardware didn't exactly fit, I tweaked it to work. The clamps on their smallist setting were a hair to big for my fork diameter. I used a good quality rubber electrical tape($4 per roll, but better than the alternative) and wrapped a few loops around the fork, under the clamp.....snug as a bug in a rug now.....lol

The other issue was the spread of the brackets on the windshield....was too wide, so I reversed them. They are manafactured to allow you to do this, i assume, as it looks and acts identical either way, only closer together.

The good news is......the guy felt like a heal because he told me he was positive they would fit, so he gave me it for $50 canadian..($40 US)  for a windshield in mint condition, with quick release hardware.......New, it would have been$ 149 US for the windshield, and $110 US  for the hardware.....that converts to $322 Canadian...plus shipping...

.A total savings of $272 Canadian ($218 US)plus shipping...WOW!!!!!

I also bought saddle bags, and a bike lift from the same guy, so i think that also played a factor in the cheap price.........

No more bugs on my teeth!!!!

cheers.........Michael

I tried a Roadchrome M200 (almost identical to Nat. Cycle Deflector) a few months ago ... had it on for 5 whole mins ... wasn't fond of looking thru it (I'm a bit vertically challenged) ... took it off & returned it ... have been trying (unsuccessfully) to get a Nat. Cycle Flyscreen from e-bay ... anyone wanna sell me one?!

Last night I mounted the shield that Savagethumper kindly sent to me (Thanks again, Bro!).  A nice, crisp fall morning for my commute to work (clear, calm, 30 degrees or so) put it to the test immediately.  I did notice that the wind wasn't whistling down my neck with the shield on, but instead was whistling around my head - couldn't hear anything else!

I decided I had it too low, so at noon I raised it a couple inches or so and went for a ride.  Raising it didn't seem to help the buffeting on my helmet and now the wind is coming in under the shield.

Any ideas on how this should be adjusted?  Should I have it more upright?  It's raked back the way I have it now.

It's Style 4 in this pic:

The bracket positions are whatever you need them to be, to position it where you want.  Nothing etched in stone there.

If a noticeable amount of wind is coming under it, then it is too high, as you know.  Should be about 1" above the headlight, I think.

How tall is the shield?  You might want to try positioning the shield more vertically too, to try to send the wind more over your head....further in front of you.

I can't speak to the correct positioning for a sport shield.  For a regular windshield, you want the top of the windshield to reach between the tip and bridge of your nose. That is where I have my set and it works well.  I have my tilted back a little but that is to get the height I want, not for any other reason. See Buying a Windshield that Fits (http://www.memphisshades.com/products.shtml).

This morning I moved it down on the uprights so that it was about a half inch above the headlight, and repositioned it so that it was more upright.  Better.   Still buffetting my helmet though.  I'm not sure I'm a windshield type of guy, but thought I'd give it a try.

This weekend may be the last decent riding weather here (Nebraska).  Unfortunately, I won't be riding.  Fortunately, I won't be riding because I'm going on a canoe-camping trip with some buddies.  Yes, we are going south - the Current River in SE Missouri.  Should be fun, and warm enough (I hope).

Looks great Susan. BTW, are those stock handle bars? When I get my 05 S40, I'd like install some thing like yours. Would the cables need to be replaced or are the original ones long enough? Thanks

The handlebar is stock but the grips are not. If you like the look of the stock Savage handlebar I bet you could pick one up on ebay eventually when someone parts out a bike or you could look at other alternatives. Jendesigner has a cool bar on her bike.  Look at her picture in: Post a Pic (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1096815740;start=0#0)

Here's a pic of the National Cycle Flyscreen I rec'd from e-bay a few days ago ... just finished installing it this afternoon ... it was kinda chilly workin' out in my unheated shed, it's only 27deg F here today! Took a bit of swearing to get it all lined up (man should've evolved a "third" hand fro doing mechanical work ...). The screen looks good though!

On mine it blocks the wind  below the chest.  Which is good because my jackets have shrunk and the denim won't stay snapped and the leather broke it's zipper.  (They fit FINE 30 years ago!)

Fortunately I don't need a jacket today.

I picked up a Memphis Shades (Santa Fe? model) on Ebay last year, retail in the Dennis Kirk catalog for $179, for $25 +shp...about $36 total.  Looks great and works very well.
GO EBAY!!
