Title: How to Add Picture/Links
Post by Susan on 10/01/04 at 07:35:23

This has come up in several threads recently so I wanted to create a topic to address the question.  It is quite easy to add pictures and links to posts.  This thread will cover:
  • How to get your pictures online
  • How to add a link to a post and also how to name that link
  • How to add a picture directly into a post
The first step is that the picture needs to be available online somewhere.  If your picture is already available online, skip to the next post.  If your picture is not yet available online, read on.  There are lots of places you can post pictures for free if you do not have your own webpage.  One that I have used is www.bikepics.com.

Here's how to get your pics online at bike pics:
  • Go to www.bikepics.com.
  • Sometimes when I go to their site, I get "page cannot be displayed" but if I refresh the page, then I get in. It works...I don't why...
  • Create an account (its easy and free).
  • After you create an account, you can easily upload whatever pics you want directly from your computer.

Adding a Link to a Post Here/Naming that Link:
After you have uploaded your pictures to a website such as bikepics (see previous post), you can include it in a post as either a link or an image.
To insert a link in a post you need the address of the page that the picture is on.
  • To get this, click on the pic you want and then use the url you see in the address line as the link.
  • Then start a message on this forum and insert the url into the message.
  • Next highlight the url and click on the "insert hyperlink" in the section called "Add YABBC tags".  It is the second symbol from the left.  This will insert the code for a link around the url.
  • As an example, I've included a link to one of my pics from bikepics below.
Remember if you get "page cannot be displayed", click on the link again: http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/220498

Naming the link is easy, it just requires editing the code a little.  The best way to understand how to do this is to click on "quote" on this message.  You will then be able to see the code in the message.  By looking at the code for this link vs. the one above, you will see how to name a link: Purple Savage (http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/220498)

To add a pic directly into a post, you need the address of the actual picture (not just the page the picture is on).
  • To get this, click on the pic you want.  Then right click and select properties. The address (url) you see under properties is the address of the picture.
    Highlight the address and copy it (you can use "control c" to copy it or just right click and select copy).
  • Then start a message on this forum and insert the url into the message.
  • Next highlight the url and click on the "insert image" in the section called "Add YABBC tags".  It is the fourth symbol from the left.  This will insert the code for an image around the url.
  • Here is an example:

http://www.bikepics.com/pics/pics/suzuki-savage-04-bikepics-220498.jpg

If you are struggling with any of this, the best way to understand what is going on, is to click "quote" on one of these posts and you will see the actual code.

If it still doesn't make sense, ask questions.  Happy posting.

Glad I was able to help!  Here's another tip: if you want to edit a previous post, you can go to that post and click "modify".  This will allow you to change a previous post (you can only modify your own posts, of course).

As well, most ISPs offer subscribers a fee "home page".  If you create a home page, you can also do as I have....create your own photo albums and post your pictures on your own site and then insert the url using "copy image location" within a posted message on this site.

Same sort of approach.  If you want to use a pic of your own it needs to be posted somewhere on the web.  Then go to "Profile", check the box that says "I have my own pic" (toward the bottom of the profile page) and then add in the url (web address) of the pic.  The pic must be a gif or a jpg.

You can also use one of the standard forum pics (choose one from the personalized picture list).

Yeah thats what I was doing.  Tried 2 different pictures and nothing came up.  So I tried putting the pic directly into the post..... no problem.  The picture above and another on the same site just will not go into my profile for some reason.  I tried a 3rd one today from a different site and it popped right up.

Perhaps they are too big?  The typical avatar pic is 100 x 100 pixels and depending on the site 29K or less.

You can also get a free software package called "Easy Thumbnails".  Go here....

Easy Thumbnails (http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/?Easy%20Thumbnails=2800)

This software will automatically reduce your photos or graphics to a thumbnail size....but the picture needs to already have a 1 to 1 aspect ratio.  A typical 480 x 640 resolution is a 3 x 4 ratio.  So you should crop it first  to a 480 x 480 (1 to 1) which prevents distortion.  The software will then reduce it to a 100 x 100 pixels.  That is how I created mine.

Check out IRFANVIEW and PhotoFiltre.
Both are free  :), Free  :D, FREE  ;D!

www.irfanview.com
www.photofiltre.com

I've just started messing with photofiltre, and it looks promising.

I've been using IRFANVIEW for almost a decade.  Every image I have posted here has been massaged with IRFANVIEW. It's a viewer, but can also resize, crop, adjust color, create slide show executables, and about a thousand other things.  I can't speak highly enough of IRFANVIEW.  I use it at home and use it at work.

Use this code to post in your tagline:
[*img]http://telin.ugent.be/~gs/peeguy.gif[/img]

Just remove the asterisks to do so.  I added them so it would not show the images instead.  Edit in your own pix of course,  unless you want it to be a little man peeing.  ::)

Title: Re: How to Add Picture/Links
Post by Paladin on 02/01/05 at 18:14:09

For purpose of demonstration I'll type the lines twice, once with curly brackets and once with square brackets:

To link to a web page you can place the address within the URL code:

{url}http://savage.andruschak.net/posters.html{/url}
http://savage.andruschak.net/posters.html

Or just ignore the url code and simply type in the address: http://savage.andruschak.net/posters.html

For long addresses you can place the address inside the first set of brackets with a description between the two sets:

{url=http://savage.andruschak.net/posters.html}posters{/url}
posters (http://savage.andruschak.net/posters.html)

For displaying pictures you use the IMG tags:

{img}http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1.jpg{/img}
http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1.jpg
{img}http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1_.jpg{/img}
http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1_.jpg
(YaBB resizes to 450 width.)

To avoid the resizing of small pictures, specify the picture size:

{img width=180 height=135}http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1_.jpg{/img}
http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1_.jpg

Finally you can combine the URL and IMG tags to make a clickable image:

{url=http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1.jpg}{img width=180 height=135}http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1_.jpg{/img}{/url}
http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1_.jpg (http://savage.andruschak.net/gargoyle1.jpg)

Can't figure out why the image is so poor. On the bikepics site, it looks just fine.

Title: Re: How to Add Picture/Links
Post by Paladin on 02/15/05 at 14:06:38

Your picture: http://predator.bikepics.com/icon/suzuki-savage-01-bikepics-292402.jpg is 113 by 85 pixels.  The YaBB resizes it to 450x338 causing ugly distortion.  Tell YaBB the size the picture is supposed to be with a width= and height= inside the bracket with the img tag.

Which picture can then be cropped to 65x65, brightened, contrastiered, sharpened and saved as a .gif for use as an avatar:

it appears you linked to the thumbnail.  open the photo at bic pics right click click on properties.  copy address
from that photo. paste into the[img][/img] icon and it will be correct.  i had the same problem a few moments ago.

as with all things computer, there are several different ways to accomplish what you want. just do what is easy for you.

now link to full sized image

it appears you linked to the thumbnail. it's a common mistake.
you must first click on thumbail to open full sized pic. you then right click  then click on properties, then copy and paste url into the [img][/img] brackets.  hope this helps.  it's a mistake i've made and corrected. thats how i recoginized it.

Thanks for the info on adding pics. Also, for fixing and posting a clear photo of it. I too liked the motorcycles color, I've not seen motorcyles with this color but have seen automobiles.
As for the sissy bar, it was missing when I bought the bike. I'm planning to have a small chrome hand hold fabricated and added. I want it to have a radius that is just lower than the rear seats height.

Happy Riding All 8)

[quote][/quote]http://www.bikepics.com/pics/icon/suzuki-boulevards40-05-bikepics-433978.jpg

"Do not worship at the alter of other peoples opinions."

(It told me to add a quote.)     :-/

Upload a photo, add a hyperlink, create a quote. Download the photo. Highlight the hyperlink. Start a message and include the photo hyperlink....Sheesh trying to add a picture to this site is above and beyond rocket science. (And I know quite a bit about rocket science.)

Okay, it seems that about 40% of the pictures on this site automaticly appear on my screen....the rest (including the jpeg I just uploaded or downloaded) from bikepics.com are blank with a red X in the upper left hand corner.
If you right click on the X "show picture" appears in the info. box. But clicking on that still does not open the picture! Most of you can apparently view these pictures because You comment on them....   ???
What the heck am I doing wrong? And how do I correct this?   :-/
Thank you in advance for any information / fixes provided.

I have noticed alot of images not showing up.  If any of you want to you can use my webserver to upload your pics.  I created a login for you, its suzukisavage and password is Ride1now

You can upload your pics there and use the path bethandre.com/bikepics/yourpic.jpg if you want.  Might be easier to organize if you created a folder first with your name or something.

If you are not sure how to ftp check out this link

Its there to use if you want.  If not keep using bikepics or whatever.

Are you highlighting the url text in your message body?  Or just the url link somewhere else?
You need to copy and paste the URL text into your post or type it in and then highlight it there.  Then click on the Insert Hyperlink button which will surround the hightlighted text in your message with the tags. Works for me:
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m10/Redfire05GT/S40/S40Heel-toeshiferandfloorboards006M.jpg

You can also just copy and paste or type the http:// url text into your message and not worry about the [url][/url] tags...the link will generally work the same.

Preview is a good way to check it before posting!

Alright I am beginning to feel like a real D-A.  All of the past three pages of disscussion appear to do w/ posting pictures to a disc. group.  What I cannot make work ( I have tryed 6 times over the last two days) is to make my avatar be my bike pic.  I got my bikes pic added to bikepics at the URL http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/916917, but so far all I get is nothin when I try to make this my avatar for my profile.  I am checking the I have a phot box and I am putting in the address correctly.  Any help would be appreciated or am I just being dense.

Well, I can't see it, just a box with a little red X in the upper left corner, however, there are other photos on the site that have the same thing...Anyone know what's up with that?

Ok.....see the "[img][/img] " in you post just after your web address.  Well, if you copy&paste the web address in between the center "][" brackets it will work....
