Title: Honda Rebel????
Post by Munson_kl279 on 09/01/04 at 10:29:42

I've been looking around for different after market parts that will work on the Savage and I've found that there are a few from the Honda Rebel.

An example of this is the M/C Enterprises engine case guard.  I found this on the JC Whitney web site.

Can anyone back this up?  I'd like to know before I spend the $140.

I had not heard that.  Will be interested to hear what you learn.

Here is the link to JC Whitney for the crash bars:

The guard might work. The rebel has a single downtube just like the Savage. So that mounting point seems okay. Not sure of the lower mounting points.

Here's a link to another website that has an aftermarket engine guard for a Savage.

That one looks kind of strange as far as the setup...It would be a different look.

The top mount would work if the holes for the U-bolt are far enough apart to go around the frame downtube...are the downtubes the same diameter?

Is there any way to find out the distance apart for the lower mounts?  They would have to mount to the foot peg mounts....which aren't the same on the Savage.

What don't you like about the Savage OEM engine guard?  It is cheaper.

Oh, I don't know what I think about that one.  It would be different.

I didn't know they made them.  Everything I have found hasn't been for the Savage.  And when I called my local dealership I was told they did make anything that went back as far as the '86 model I have.  Now, since I've been reading up on this site I've found that was a crock since Suzuki hasn't changed the frame, right?

I think that's right.  Hopefully Jon will weigh in here as at various times he owned an '88, a '96 and now the S40.

Like I said before, they don't keep knowledgeable or reliable people working in parts departments.  It is much better to do your own research.  Back to that "What year?" thing again.

I could be wrong, but the only difference that I know of between your frame and mine, is that I welded metal tabs on mine to mount the engine guard  ::)  because I didn't want to use the u-bolts.

Thanks for the help Greg.  I just ordered a Savage case guard.  Seeing your picture let me see that it would mount the same.  It's a little smaller than I'm used to seeing but I guess I'm also used to seeing them are larger bikes in general. (i.e. My brother's Marauder or my dad's Heritage :))

Welcome, welcome.

Engine guards vary but mostly they just keep your cases off the ground if it falls over....and I know from a spill that the footpegs will take that duty before the engine hits anything.  With the single cylinder, there just isn't that much sticking out there anyway.  Either way you'll still risk a turnsignal or muffler.  I don't know, maybe on a bigger bike, it might make it easier to pick up if it just fell over on the guard.

Honestly, I think that the majority of them are just "chrome goodies" and that's why I got mine.  I liked the small size of the OEM guard because it fit the style of the bike.

Can you put highway pegs on it?

Yes.  I did, but I didn't like them because it brought my knees up too high.  The frame is too short.  Not the same as forward controls.
