Title: newbie questions
Post by NOAH on 08/24/04 at 14:30:46

hello,  i have been looking at a savage to buy and make an old school like chopper out of and was wandering a couple of things like, what size are the bars (1'') ?,  do how many years have they been out, and if any changes through out the years (any promblems to know about).   thanks

Oh man.  Buy the bike, get the saw and start choppin'.  We're here to confuse and amuse you through the entire process.

Oh, and just start reading the topics.  If you don't find what you need, we'll talk about it again for sure.  It's what we do when we aren't riding or wrenching.

Yep, the bars are 1".  They've been making them since 1986.  There haven't been too many changes, and the biggest problem is the dreaded "Savage Plug Leak" (really minor)

The problem with THE PLUG is that in the Suzuki WSM it only says "fit a plug".
Reading the SWSM the headbolts should be retorqued at 500 mls, this is usualy done by the "stealer" so as not to void warranty. They ( the mechanics) go by the book, don't apply sealant and you have a leaking plug shortly after.

Not to mention that I found...when the "stealer" did the initial service on my spouse's bike...he didn't "fit the plug" all the way back in place.  It was half way out of place when I got in there.

Buy the Savage and make the chopper!  Below are some pictures of my personal favorite Savage Chopper.

I am also building and old school Savage chopper. Here are a couple of pics of what I have done so far. I have a lot to do yet. My next big step will be raking out the front end and extended forks. If I can help I'll be glad to share what I have learned so for.

gargoyle,

where's your battery? ?
did you switch to the k&n filter and put it where the filter was?
that's very much what i want to do to mine, only not a shiney paint job.

and to truly be old school you need to convert to chain with a kick start... ;D

That looks sweet.  Just looking at the photo, it appears he has a clamp-on air-filter (probably K&N) and the battery may be where the stock air-filter was.

Like Sunny says convert it to chain, not sure about the kickstart.

one thing about chopping my savage, that makes me pause, is will it still be as ride-able for my commute?

If it's not, you have to buy another one just for commuting :D

Now that's where I wanted my battery, but my budget was limited so I could only use the stock box and battery which I moved back 1 1/2".  But I like how he fit the battery back in the frame.  Something to think about for this winter....with a smaller gel bettery.

Anyway, with the side cover gone, I had to hide the ignition unit somewhere....and since the toolkit is about useless, I put it there.  My tools are in a toolbag now.

That's it, plus he fabricated a new battery box and got it chromed.  Good job.

MAYBE.  JUST MAYBE!  I think that Gitarzan posted a pic of the Savage 400 which looks a lot like the 650.  It is a long shot, but it had one.

Aside from that I don't think so.  Besides, you'd have to figure in a manual compression release too.
